Como Zoo has named its new baby emperor tamarin twins after coaches at the University of Minnesota.

Fleck and Pitino were born at the St. Paul zoo on Aug. 8. P.J. Fleck is the new coach of the Gopher football team. Richard Pitino leads the Minnesota men’s basketball team.

The names were announced Thursday, when Fleck makes his coaching debut in Minnesota.

“With the beginning of the Gophers football season kicking off tonight, and the basketball season around the corner, we wanted to show support to our neighbors down the road and to their young coaches,” Michelle Furrer, Como Park Zoo & Conservatory Director, said in prepared statement.

Emperor tamarins are rare in zoos, with only 28 currently in U.S. zoos. At Como, they can be found in the primates display.
Native to parts of Brazil and Peru, emperor tamarins are noted for their long tails and their long, white, drooping mustaches. Their bodies usually grow to between 9 and 10.5 inches, with tails about 15 inches in length.

Fleck and Pitino now weigh about 40 grams, about the size of a mini-candy bar, zoo officials said. The twins are the fifth and sixth babies born to their parents Lara and Roger and join their brothers Luke and Chewbacca at the Como Zoo.

Expect to see Fleck and Pitino being carried around on the back of their father for the first few weeks, with their siblings often helping out, Zoo officials said.
