Jaylen Dunlap, believed to be Illinois’ best cornerback, has yet to practice with what Smith called a lower leg injury.

Notes • Freshman offensive tackle Larry Boyd, who had been sitting out with a minor knee injury, was back on the field Monday and at times he rejoined the first team offensive line. He’s from Trinity Catholic in St. Louis County.

“He’s missed a lot of valuable time,” Smith said. “He’s getting in better shape because there’s a lot going on with the offensive line and he needs every rep he can get. It was good to see him out there today.”

Illinois is still experimenting to find its best five offensive linemen, and that’s been difficult with Boyd out.

But both Boyd and another true freshman, Alex Palczewski, continue to be among the top six along with Nick Allegretti, Christian DiLauro, Gabe Megginson and Doug Kramer.
