As we embark on a push for championships and titles, we cannot forget to share the love with our bands and spirit squads.

They really need to fully fund them as they do the regular athletic programs. They are an integral part of Gopher Athletics. I envy the Badgers Marching Band and the bands of other successful teams in the B1G.

I think Mark Coyle is more amenable to this than previous ADs.

Agreed. Especially because I haven't seen a team yet that says they didn't love the band. Football coaches under Kill and Claeys loved the band, and Fleck has shown lots of love for the band as well. Football players have said the band pumps them up when we play third down shorts. Women's Hockey is always excited when the band gets to go on the road with them, etc. The list goes on and on. The AD just needs to also get on the bandwagon (pun unintended), and they are as far as I can see. Just slowly.

It'd be cool to see more student athletes go to the Indoor Concert. Especially the football team, I'm sure they'd have fun.

Thanks! I was gonna post a PSA in a few days letting everyone know of the change in location. Glad Gopher Sports is doing their part to help promote the show!

Just watched it myself since I couldn't be at the game. Very nice show, and excellent music choice! I'm sad that I graduated last year and couldn't be a part of it.

The return of high school band day-cool.


In fact, more than 1,000 marching band musicians will be blazing away at the same time at the University of Minnesota's halftime show when the Gophers play at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis on Saturday.

The megaband performance marks the return of High School Band Day, a U tradition dating to 1951 in which high school bands around the state play a halftime show en masse at a Gophers football game...


...When marching band director Betsy McCann decided to resurrect the event this year, she got responses from more high school bands than she could handle. She capped the number of participants at the first 10 high schools who contacted her.

They'll be bringing a total of about 800 student musicians to the game, joining the 324-member U marching band on the field in a joint performance. They'll be performing a Super Bowl-themed show, playing music done by stars at past Super Bowl halftime shows including Lady Gaga's "Poker Face," Beyoncé's "Crazy in Love" and Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars' "Uptown Funk."
