Stephen Cohn — Ohio State over Minnesota
Everyone else is mentioning OSU quarterback J.T. Barrett, so I’ll put in my two cents about him and then walk away, but am I the only one that feels like J.T. Barrett has been at Ohio State FOREVER?? Just seems to me like Barrett was there when Urban Meyer was still winning BCS titles with Timmy Tebow in Gainesville. As for Barrett, he’s too good and polished to lose to any Big Ten West team. The team he’ll be demolishing in Indianapolis is first-year head coach P.J. Fleck and his Golden Gophers. Minnesota QB Demry Croft is big, athletic and can read a defense, all of which should help him lead his team to a division crown.

Stephen Cohn gets it! Although his Championship game prediction is incorrect.

Stephen Cohn is definitely not a dink. a Minnesota over Ohio State prediction would've been asking for too much.

So if his scenario actually played out, & the Gophers were 12-1, would that mean a Rose Bowl berth in the CFP?

Bold pick. I like it.

Related, can anyone think of any new coach/quarterback combo winning a major conference? (there could be 25 examples of this or zero, I have no idea)

I could be wrong, but a cursory glance over the ACC, SEC, B1G and Pac-12 championship game histories would suggest it has never happened while those leagues have had a championship game. Plenty of examples of 2nd year coaches doing it, and some examples of teams with new coach/QB combos making it to the championship game but losing (UCLA 2012 with Mora and Hundley being one) but no examples of a first-year coach winning the conference title game, let alone a first-year coach with a newly-starting QB.

Before there were title games, and in the Big XII, I'm sure there's some example out there, but there can't be that many.

Urban would have probably done it in year one at Ohio St but they were ineligible for the post season. They still went 12-0 and it was Braxton Miller's first full season as the starter. However, he did start a number of games the prior season as a Freshman.

Idk.... I guess I'm so Minnesotan that I'd take getting demolished by O$U if it meant we were B1G West champs and Potentially New years 6 bound ...

Every Minnesota fan alive should take a division championship this year, regardless of the outcome of the championship game itself and regardless of the bowl destination (NY6 or otherwise). It would be the best regular-season outcome in fifty years, and likely mean we win at least two of the three against Iowa, Nebraska and Wisconsin.

Agree 100%. Love this outcome, especially if the '18 and '19 seasons are as special as Fleck says they will be. Building off a division championship would be a hell of a start for the Fleck era.

Stephen Cohn has filled out the Group of 4-5.

I always thought Stephen Cohn was a fine, upstanding member of society. Well-bred, raised right, and schooled at the finest institutions.

While I'd love to see this happen this is pure lunacy. Wisconsin will win this year w NW as a dark horse.

If we didn't have the mass exodus from the secondary and a shaky oline, I could see us doing this with the way croft has looked in camp. However, with these 2 units being dangerously thin....no way are going to the b1g championship

This may be one of the most unpredictable seasons in recent Gopher History.

new coach - new QB - new offensive and defensive systems - etc. I suppose I could imagine a scenario where the team catches fire, gets a few breaks along the way, and sneaks into the Conf championship game. Do I think that is likely to happen - No. Because I could also imagine a scenario where things don't break right, and the team struggles to become bowl-eligible.

If Nebraska beats Badgers in Lincoln, they should win the West, even losing 1 or 2 conference games.

Great way to start rowing the boat in year one. Year two - experienced QB, 2 Sr running backs, improved receivers, depth in the secondary - the Big Ten ours for the taking!
