Gophers romp 7-1 over Spartans:

On a perfect day for soccer, the University of Minnesota soccer team played nearly a perfect game against Big Ten foe Michigan State, winning 7-1 at home with six different players scoring goals.

April Bockin scored once for the Gophers, and added a school-record tying four assists to help the Gophers punish the Spartans at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.

“April has been awesome this weekend. She stretched teams and was very dangerous the entire weekend,” head coach Stefanie Golan said. “She is a player when she has the ball at her feet coming at you; you are going to be on your heels because anything can happen. She had a really solid and impressive performance today.”

The six different players scored for Minnesota, which is the most by the team since the team had eight different players score against the University of Nebraska-Omaha in a 9-1 rout on Sept. 13, 2015.

Seems the ladies took out a few frustrations on Michigan State today. Can't say I'm surprised; they have a tie and a couple of losses on their record they probably feel shouldn't be there. In other words, they were looking to kick some butt, especially after the Michigan game.

Anyway, a big day for April Bockin! Glad to see her step forward with a goal and four assists. Good to see Squires find the net again as well.

This team is certainly capable of playing with just about anybody. The question is whether they'll score enough goals and limit their mistakes enough to come up with desired results the rest of the way.

Minnesota takes down #16 Rutgers netting the game winner with under four remaining. Castro scored the Gophers first goal with about 10 minutes remaining in the first half. It was quickly followed by a Rutgers equalizer off of a nice nutmeg.

Had a chance to watch most of it.

The ladies played very well and held the majority of the possesion with both goals being things of beauty.

They're certainly picking up their game at the right time. Hopefully, they can continue their current form the rest of the way.

The Gophers completed a successful East coast trip with a 3-1 win over Maryland. Minnesota scored two early goals matched by a Maryland response to establish a 2-1 lead. The Gophers controlled play most of the match and then finished the scoring with this terrific counter.

They looked really really good this weekend.

Megan Koenig had an awesome game today. Both her goal and the cross-field pass to Bockin for the team's third goal were right on the money.

Nice to see Molly Fiedler get one today as well.

The ladies are in a really good groove right now and have a better than average chance to be ranked this week.

Perfect time to come home for games with Indiana and Purdue next week.

Gernes netted the game winner in the 52nd minute.

On a rainy afternoon at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium, the University of Minnesota soccer team took care of business and won their fourth straight against Indiana University 3-2.

The Gophers got a pair of goals from Big Ten scoring leader Sydney Squires and then Julianna Gernes scored the game-winning goal in the second half.

“I think we are happy with the performance. W’s are hard to come by in the Big Ten,” associate head coach Krystle Seidel said. “It wasn’t the perfect game by any means. We are never excited about conceding two goals, but the fact that we were able to respond from a goal down and be able to respond and come out on top is important for this group.

Had a chance to watch online.

Defense was not good. Marking was lax, as was ball pressure and the passing out of the back was really sloppy.

Offense looked pretty good. Could have had at least two more goals, but all three tallies were really nice plays.

Gonna need to play a lot better against Purdue on Sunday.

Gophers defeat Purdue 2-0.

In front of a packed house, the University of Minnesota soccer team captured their fifth straight win with a 2-0 win over the Purdue Boilermakers on Sunday at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.

The Gophers scored a pair of goals in the second half by their two leading scorers, and shutout a Big Ten opponent for the first time this season.

“We are really happy with the result today,” head coach Stefanie Golan said after the game. “Coming into this one with two really good teams that have good goal scorers and for us to put two away and to also shut them out is huge for our team moving forward.”

Senior Sydney Squires scored just three minutes into the second half on a fantastic finish inside the box. Her first attempted was blocked, but the Big Ten scoring leader kept at it and fired another shot that went off a Purdue defender and ended up in the back of the net.

After about three weeks of really stellar play, the Gophers (9-2-3 overall, 5-1-1 Big 10) are ranked #23 in the latest United Coaches Soccer Poll.

Not surprising considering how well they have been performing lately. They're currently on a five-game winnings streak as they head to Northwestern and Illinois this week.

Also of note: Sydney Squires leads the Big 10 in goals with 13 and is tied for second in the country in goal scoring. Meanwhile, April Bockin leads the nation in assists with 11.

As a team, Minnesota also ranks first in the Big 10 in goals scored and is tied for 12th nationally, averaging 2.5 goals per contest.

Congrats on making it back into the rankings ladies! :D

Minnesota split on the road this weekend losing at Northwestern on Friday and then winning 4-0 at Illinois. The win in Champaign featured some spectacular goals. The first by Bockin:

The second by Heslin:

Good response coming off the Northwestern loss. First time all year I was disappointed in both their effort and performance.

Seems they came out focused and got things back on track before a huge game vs. Ohio State this week.

During the volleyball match, this happened. The Gophers clinch a home match versus Wisconsin in the B1G tourney.

Nice way to close out the regular season. Didn't realize they were without Tori Burnett, hope she's back for the Wisconsin game.

Now need to find a way to get that Badger monkey off their back.

So much for finally getting the Wisconsin monkey off their back.

The ladies might have played themselves right out of the NCAA Tournament today with a Big 10 Tournament quarterfinal loss to Wisconsin, 2-0.

And if that ends up being the case, they deserve their fate.

Simply put, their performance on all fronts was extremely poor throughout the match. The Badgers were much better in every department, including from a simple effort stand point, and clearly wanted to win much more than the Gophers did. Even after going down 2-0, the Gophers showed very little urgency until the last 10 minutes, which is WAY too long if you're actually focused on trying to come back from down by two.

Looked a lot like the Northwestern game, where they went down by two and pretty much mailed it in.

Extremely disappointed in the team today. If they don't make the NCAAs, and it's touch and go at best, they have no one to blame but themselves.
