Gophers coach P.J. Fleck and his staff have sprinted out of the starting gate to net an abundance of oral commitments for the 2018 recruiting class.

With another four additions over the weekend, Minnesota’s 30th-ranked class now totals 23 pledges, which is second only to Navy’s 30, according to 247sports.com. Only six Football Bowl Subdivision programs have 20 or more players on board, including Big Ten brethren Penn State (20) and Purdue (21).

The Gophers also want to be a pacesetter when some of the NCAA’s recently adopted rule changes take effect this winter. In May, the Collegiate Commissioners Association approved a three-day early singing period from Dec. 20-22, which will fast-forward the timeline from the traditional national signing day on the first Wednesday in February.

At Big Ten media days last week, Fleck said he expects “a lot” of the current pledges to sign in December. “All of them that are hopefully committed right now,” he continued. “A lot of them are going to start early as well. You are going to see a lot more early enrollees.”

Go Gophers!!

Navy at 30. Kind of surprises me a bit. I do believe the early signing period is going to change things. Wonder if someone is going to put an event an event together for the first signing day.

Prediction - with the signing period from Dec 20-22, some headline writer will use "Christmas Comes Early" when writing about the early signing class.

Really wish the early signing period was before that time frame. Late October-early November would have made much more sense IMO

No way it was going to be before most coaches get fired. Would have created all kinds of nonsense activity for the NCAA.
