per Marcus:

The 6-foot-9 Carlson and 6-10 Garcia are highly skilled posts. They both fit the “stretch four” label with the ability to face the basket, shoot and put the ball on the floor. That caught the attention of Pitino, who offered both scholarships (along with Park Center’s 2020 big man Dain Dainja) on the same day in April.

“(The Gophers) like how I can take it inside, take it to the hoop or shoot the three,” Carlson said. “They like my versatility a lot. They like how I rebound and how hard I play.”

Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Purdue and Wisconsin are his Big Ten offers. Carlson also has offers from Stanford, Creighton, Kansas State and Iowa State (his father’s alma mater).

In the next couple months, Carlson plans to take unofficial visits to Michigan, Iowa and Butler in August and late September. He will also try to see Nebraska, Iowa State and Creighton when his family makes road trips to see his sister, Brynn, play volleyball with Kansas State this fall. She’s a 6-4 sophomore outside hitter and former Cretin-Derham Hall standout.

per Evans:

Carlson is the ideal 5-man in today’s game as he can score inside and out, and do so in an efficient manner. He doesn’t lack for toughness, nor does he have a deficiency in the skill department as he can score over either shoulder in the post, extend the defense with the pick-and-pop perimeter jumper and convert on the face-up out of the mid-post region. He plays hard, is mobile enough as a rim runner and a good athlete around the basket as an area rebounder and shot changer. The regional programs have made Carlson a priority as he was watched by coaches from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Marquette, Stanford, Georgetown and Georgia on Saturday; he will take unofficial visits to Creighton, Iowa State and Nebraska next month.

per Evans:

The D1 Minnesota 17-under squad went down in defeat on Saturday evening, shocking many and disappointing others that were hoping that a rematch of last week’s finals between the unit and Compton Magic would play itself out again. However, the program was able to see its 16-under uniform play on through championship Sunday thanks to its super talented front-line.

On Saturday, we highlighted the play of Ben Carlson, one of the best frontcourt prospects in his class nationally. Carlson’s feel for the game in the low and high post area, ability to shoot the perimeter jumper and also defend his basket is evident. He will visit Nebraska, Iowa State and Creighton next month. Stanford, Northwestern, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Ohio State are just a few that have already offered.

The perfect pairing in the frontcourt alongside Carlson is Dawson Garcia, a southpaw with sneaky edges of toughness that he uses in producing through physicality. The lefty can also shoot the perimeter jumper as he is most comfortable playing facing the basket out of the high post region as he can dribble, shoot, pass and defend. He is a strong top-50 prospect that will take a visit to Texas in September as he carries 10 offers, ones coming from a group that includes Minnesota, Wisconsin, Butler and Xavier.

per Evans:

IN HIS OWN WORDS
Stanford: “Obviously, they offer the whole package with academics and basketball but also good weather, they really like me and it is just really cool that they have such an interest in me.”

Minnesota: “He (Richard Pitino) really likes my versatility and the way that I can shoot the three but also go inside and post-up. They want to keep me in the state and Minnesota, there are just so many good basketball players, so they are just trying to keep everyone there and if they do, they can be really good.”

Wisconsin: “They really like how I would play well within their system. They have a lot of guys like me in the past and I have gone on a few visits there in the past and I know their staff very well; I like them a lot.”

Indiana: “I was on a visit there a couple of months ago. I didn’t understand how crazy they are down there; it is a basketball state. They are all about basketball down there. They are a really cool basketball school with a big-time home court advantage.”

Purdue: “They like how I would fit with them. They think that I am like Caleb Swanigan a little bit. They love their big guys there. They are obviously a top program every year. I really like coach (Matt) Painter; he is a really good dude and they have a very nice staff.”

RIVALS' REACTION
Carlson is an impressive big man that can score in the post, facing the basket to 20-feet and also defend his basket as a rim protector.

Thanks to his elite level grades and relatively polished skill set, Carlson has already become a top target for some of the top Midwest programs. Stanford has found great traction within his recruitment, though the same can be said for others including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Northwestern and Purdue. Look for more offers to come in in the coming years.

Carlson appears to be 6-8 and a good stretch 4 unless he grows 2+ inches. He is not a 5.

He actually reminds me a bit of Robby Hummel.

Crazy recruitment on this one. Thought he was a lock for Iowa State or Stanford but now newcomers have picked up momentum as a fit.
