4-star Minnesota Forward’s Stock Rising with Michigan
With its point guard needs now met in the class of 2020 thanks to the commitment of Maumee, Ohio combo guard Zeb Jackson, Michigan’s attention has shifted to the frontcourt where several top prospects are showing major interest. One such target is St. Paul (Minn.) East Ridge forward Ben Carlson. The 6-9, 205-pounder brings a versatility to the floor that has high major programs lining up at his door.
“He is offensively and defensively efficient,” East Ridge coach Bryce Tesdahl told The Michigan Insider at his school earlier this month. “He’s a threat on both ends of the floor and he can rebound at the highest level possible. I think he’s one of the best rebounders, if not THE best rebounder in the state. He’s almost a guaranteed double-double, and I think he’ll be close to some triple-doubles this year as well.
“He can share the ball, can make the three, and can jump over people and dunk. He can rebound and block shots above the rim. He has put on some pounds strength-wise and I think that’s going to continue to add to his dominance. He really picked it up the last three months of his sophomore year. In his junior year I think he’s going to take another big step to help out his team, and obviously prepare him for the next level as well.”
Carlson had the opportunity to get a first-hand assessment of the potential fit in Ann Arbor when he visited campus for the first time last month. He came away from the experience extremely impressed.
“It was really great to get out there,” said Carlson. “They’re obviously a top school every single year. They’ve got a really great history there, so we were at a football game against Nebraska. We went around campus a little bit, saw the facilities, talked with the coaching staff before the game, and then we tailgated with some of the players. That was fun. And then we went to the game. Obviously that’s one of the best atmospheres in college football, so that was really cool to see that. It was a fun visit.”
