Zephyrhills, FL (Wiregrass Ranch) DB Shamaur McDowell has committed to the Gophers over offers from Cincinnati, Iowa State, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, and others. The 5'11", 184-pound defensive back joins Benny Sapp III, Terell Smith, and Tyrik Henderson in the 2018 defensive back recruiting class. As a whole, Minnesota's recruiting class now ranks 20th nationally, according to 24/7 Sports.

McDowell has impressive top end speed, ball skills, and is an excellent open field tacker. His footwork needs polishing in terms of shadowing wide receivers, but he has the skill-set. He isn't the most physical player at the line of scrimmage, but he shows his aggressive playing style in run support. He uses his speed to win battles against wide receivers vertically. In those situations, McDowell needs coaching on how to swivel his hips to the sideline to get into position. I also want to see him play with more physicality after turning his hips and tracking the ball. However, I like his potential and think he can be placed all over the field to utilize his unique skill-set.

The Gophers have been recruiting defensive backs that have less length and physicality. The additions for 2018 are speedy players that have excellent ball skills and tackling ability. This is a shift from how the Gophers have recruited defensive backs in the past.

Looks like he's been adding a lot of offers including Power 5 the last couple months. Looks like a playmaker but his hudl is pretty limited.

AT his previous stops Maurice's DBs have been lauded for their turnover numbers, no? It will be interesting to watch for any contrasts with Sawvel's philosophy.

Maurice's defensive backs always had excellent ball skills and athleticism. They had their body in position (hip swivel, strong shadow, etc.) to make plays and notch a pass breakup. I love the way he coaches the defensive backs in practices I've seen. You'll see plenty of turnovers created because of their sound footwork and ball skills. Just a different type of player that's being recruited!

Appreciate your expertise

Congrats to Shamaur!

Excellent choice in a program that will develop you potentially into an NFL caliber player by the time you graduate and with a top notch education and manhood training to boot.

per Joe:

The Gophers reeled in their 15th commitment for the Class of 2018 late Sunday night, when Florida cornerback Shamaur McDowell announced he has picked Minnesota.

The 5-11, 185-pound McDowell is a consensus three-star recruit from Wiregrass Ranch High School in suburban Tampa. He also had reported offers from Iowa State, North Carolina State, Purdue and Washington State.

All 15 players in Minnesota's class are currently ranked as three-star recruits in the 247Sports composite rankings. But it's been enough to put the Gophers at No. 19 in the latest national rankings on that site. McDowell, like most players in the Gophers class, had multiple Power Five offers.

We all know how good Sawvel was with the DBs, but I've been pretty impressed with the DBs that Fleck has amassed thus far. We'll see how they compare on the field, but on paper they're impressive.
