Former Gophers wide receiver Eric Decker will be released or traded by the New York Jets this week, per Adam Schefter. He was scheduled to make $7.25 million during his eighth NFL season. The Jets released linebacker David Harris today and are trimming cap space to revamp their roster. Decker was recovering from rotator-cuff and hip surgeries that ended his 2016 campaign prematurely. The recovery period was six months for the hip and eight months for the shoulder. He should be close to fully recovered by mid-July.

After spending three seasons with the Jets, Decker will draw looks from NFL teams in need of wide receiver help. The Ravens, Bills, and Panthers are few teams that come to mind. Decker has become a red zone warrior in his seven years with the Jets and Broncos. Dating back to 1985, Decker is 12th all-time in NFL receiving touchdowns (52). He notched 1,027 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2015 and the former Gopher can help a team in need of a vertical passing threat.

Would love to see another native Minnesota WR come home and play for the purple!

The Jets are in full rebuild mode. They are dumping salaries and anybody over 30 has got a chance to be gone. Hope it means that Decker, who is a great receiver, but is coming off an injury that only allowed him to play 3 games last season, gets another shot.

Before last year, he'd only missed 4 games in his career. Getting out of NY to a team with an actual QB would be great. Doubt he ends up here.

Good point. Was thinking about his last year here and last year at NY. He needed surgeries on his hip and rotator cuff last year. "Injury prone" was a bad choice. I'll change that.
