The case will now go through the school's student conduct process, where a panel that includes one student, one faculty member and one staff member can levy sanctions on the players that range from a warning to suspension or expulsion from school.

According to school policy, the panel must make a decision regarding sanctions within seven calendar days. That decision can then be appealed to the school's vice president of student affairs or equity review officer.

Mary Chartier, a Lansing-based attorney who represents one of the players, said on Tuesday afternoon that her client intends on appeal the decision and criticized the investigation.

"I think that there are extreme flaws in how the university conducts its investigatory proceedings, and at this time my client does intend to appeal the decision," Chartier said.
