End of an era:

For the first time in 17 years, Iowa women’s basketball players will have to find their own way to keep their games sharp over the summer.

Randy Larson, who runs the summer Game Time League, said on KCJJ on Monday that the league will not operate this summer due to NCAA rules changes.

“I’m going to miss it,” Larson said during the AllHawkeyes.com segment. “Those kids are so ambitious, so dedicated and play every bit as hard (as the men) but they’re more collaborative and they have more fun at it.”

The NCAA has relaxed its rules regarding coach-athlete contact over the summer while also counting incoming freshmen against the two-teammate per summer league team limit.

Larson says that last rule is what really created the problem because Iowa would have 13 players in the league, creating the need for at least seven teams. With UNI refusing to participate in the Game Time League, Larson says they couldn’t find enough players to create that many teams.
