Gopher Softball 2018

I think she can carry most of the load through the rest of the Big Ten schedule and into the Big Ten Tourney. She's at 137 innings now. Probably get about 270 or so if the coach keeps using her the way she has been. Moulton did that a couple of seasons. Go back farther and Hassett logged over 300. Should be a blowout here and there or another cancellation which will help save on her.
They really need to get these games in. This weather is ridiculous.

Watching the Twins opener now. After watching a ton a fast paced fastpitch, it's difficult to watch the slooooow pace of play between pitches in MLB.

I've always been a Gophers baseball fan going way back, but last year I went to a couple of their games. Compared with the softball, the baseball games seemed really slow moving and the play uninspired. I left before the baseball games were even over.

Haven't been able to see much of the ladies so far this year due to being quite busy on my end of things.

But if today's first game against Michigan State is any indication of how they've approached the season to date, I'd say they've backslid about three or four steps since last year. It's incredible. No fire, no focus.

Hoping this might be a sampling error, but with seven returning regulars from last year, I'd say what I've seen in terms of stats and today's first game against the Spartans borders on appalling from a performance standpoint.

Not sure what Trachsel and company are doing in terms of coaching, but this team is under-performing at an absolutely staggering level.

Oh my gosh. I did not watch the game. Just looking at the score now. Depressing.

I agree with you. In addition to hitting averages being down, manufacturing runs is at a minimum. In the first inning of game 1, they got 2 hit batters and a MSU error but scoredd no runs. Once in game 2 they got Jensen, who's super fast, on first and then against a left-handed pitcher they missed the chance to have Partain and Parlich bunt to make things happen. There seems to be no inspiration coming from the coaches, but that's only my opinion. I've followed every single game, and that's the pattern I see. Losing to teams inferior to them makes me very sad.

There must be something we don't see. Jensen is faster than Maddie but Maddie steals bases and they don't have Jensen do the same. It does seem like they leave a lot of runs on the bases and don't try hard to move runners. They also have almost completely stopped using pinch runners. There are some fast girls in that dugout.

So with the game cancelled I guess the win total I originally predicted might be right! I had some ESP going on! LOL!

I would like to see Wagner and Sidney trade places in the order. Wagner is the hotter hitter right now and they need someone to protect Linda. She is getting walked way too many times.

I'm working out of state, so not on top of these games at all. Didn't watch either one. My question is: did that pitcher the Gophers faced in the first game, Rainey, get ahead in the count? Gophers only had 1 base on balls against her in 5.1 innings. Her base on balls stat is just outrageous going into the game. 56 walks in 64 innings and 66 hits to go along with it. That's close to 2 an inning. Just hard for me to believe they can't jump all over a pitcher like that. Maybe she is improving and the Gophers aren't and I'm barking up the wrong tree.

St Catherine's playing Carleton tonight in a double header at the Augsburg dome. A coach to keep an eye on.

My take on game 1 is that they weren't ready to play. MSU's pitcher was left-handed; she threw breaking stuff outside to the Gophers' lefty hitters, which left them helpless. So why not bunt? Scrap? No hits for 5.1 innings is bad. I couldn't see any adjustments by those hitters. Fiser has lost 8 games, about six of which have been donated to the opponents by her team, either by lack of clutch hitting or poor defense. I agree that there has to be something going on that we don't see. If the talent is there, then the proper guidance and motivation must be missing.

The split with MSU wasn't too costly. Only dropped two spots to #31 in the RPI. Crucial stretch of games ahead, though.

Gophers have 8 BIG games remaining against teams with decent RPIs (#57 Iowa X 3, #44 Wisconsin X 2, and #26 Nebraska X 3). That's the good news. The bad news is that they end the BIG season with three against Purdue (#173) and three against Penn State (#230). Two non-conference games against #69 ND State won't hurt, but one against #189 South Dakota won't help.

I appreciate your RPI posts. I haven't ever paid much attention to RPI and how it fluctuates during the season.

For an example of how much RPI matters, compare last week to this week. Last week Wisconsin was at 35 and Northwestern was at 33. Both safely in the field of 64. One week later Wisconsin loses all three to Iowa and falls to 44, while NW drops 2 of 3 to Purdue and drops to 45. Both probably on the outside looking in.

Darn. Missed all but the last inning of the beat down of Iowa. Too bad they couldn't play a double header tonight before the monsoon/blizzard (monzard?) starts tomorrow.

Fun fact. Pulled up the live video feed of the St. Kates vs. Bethel softball game tonight and it turns out they're using little Northwestern College's field. It's a beautiful little full turf field that's softball specific. That turf field sure would come in handy in years like this; I don't recall seeing any others like it around here.

Looks like they decided to pitch to Lindaman. She was back in that #2 spot. Fiser certainly was tough.

Had no idea the Gophers were playing today. Nice win! 84 pitches for Fiser. Love it.

Your wish is their command. Double header today starting at 4.

How do you send the runner with no outs and Lindaman coming to bat?? Insanity.
