Questions and comments by P.J. Fleck on today’s Sports Huddle are as follows:

1) Now that the assistant coaches are back from the spring recruiting trails, Sid wanted to know how the recruiting went and if he’s happy with the recruiting:

“Yes, so far . . . commitments and other recruits visiting in June . . . some attending (Minnesota camp) . . . an exciting time,’ Fleck said.

2) Sid wanted to know if they “keep in touch” with their commitments:

Fleck was rapid and succinct in his response. “They can take an unofficial visit on campus (presently) anytime.”

When talking about commitments and potential recruits Fleck sounded excited to get the players on campus for a visit, as quickly as possible.

3) Sid asked if he went on the road when the assistant coaches were out visiting recruits:

“There’s a lot of rules of what I can and can’t do . . . I don’t go on the road (during spring,” Fleck answered.

He said, however, that he can visit with the recruits when they’re on campus visiting the school. That’s why he wants to get the recruits on campus for unofficial visits as quickly as possible.

Fleck then talked about the importance Minnesota’s upcoming summer camps – live evaluations. He said that some of the coaches attend other camps for evaluation purposes.

4) Sid brought up the topic of injured players. He said that 22 players sat out spring drills, and he wanted to know if they’ll be healthy soon:

Fleck replied, “They’re getting healthy . . . probably will be back at the end of June . . . having them back is priceless.”

Fleck also stated the obvious, they need the injured players back. He said he was proud of the injured players' attitudes and the effort they put forth in rehab and in learning and adapting to the new culture.

5) Sid wanted to know if the they’ll be recruiting JUCO players:

Fleck said they recruited two JUCO players in the 2017 class – one offensive and one defensive lineman (the need for immediate help). As to the practice of recruiting JUCO players, Fleck said, “No, not really . . . knew we needed a couple who fit our culture . . . (we’re) committed to recruiting high school player and developing them.”

6) Sid asked if the returning players are attending summer school:

Fleck said that “95%” are in summer school. He went on to say that there are a handful who are studying internationally and some are busy with internships. “Proud of them studying abroad,” Fleck said. He said a handful of players are experiencing different cultures through their overseas studies. He’s hopeful there’ll be more next year. The international studies program is of short duration, only a few weeks. So they’ll be back soon for the summer workouts.

7) Sid asked what the players are doing at this time:

Fleck told Sid the players are off this week, but they’ll start their volunteer workouts the following week.

He concluded the question by saying the players that are back on campus “they’re excited to be back.” He stressed in his remarks that is exactly what he wants – players being excited about the Minnesota program and its culture.

8) Mike Max wanted to know what the players will do specifically (running, lifting) during the summer workouts. He also wanted to know what his expectations are when he’s not coaching the players:

“Expectation . . . do the right thing!” He said the players will be running and lifting everyday and that he expects “bust your butt.” They should be working hard not only for themselves but the players lining up next to them.

He also said if some player(s) don’t push themselves they‘ll find that there way behind when fall practices begin. “We’re picking up where left off (last spring).”

9) Dave Mona asked the final question, which had three parts: 1) Who is he listening to when he has the headset on? 2) Where are his coordinators located during the games? and 3) After the game has finished, what stat does he look at first?

Fleck answered the third question first. He said the first stat that he looks at is the turnover margin. He said he looks at the running totals, but he emphasized the importance of turnovers in a game.

Offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca will be upstairs in the press box. Defensive coordinator Rod Smith prefers being on the sideline. Fleck said he wants the coaches to be “where they’re comfortable.”

As to the headset question, Fleck said he likes listen to country music (he listed a couple artists). His response brought about a lot of laughter. He then told them to tell Sid he also listens to Frank Sinatra.

Another sincere "Thank You" from paradise.

Pretty chilly up here the last few days....meanwhile though we've got DL doing an awesome job with the Sports Huddle Report making us forget about the weather we've been having! Thanks DL for helping me get through the day with your excellent report!

Mr. Detroit Lakes...I used to never miss a Sports Huddle. Now with you around, I feel free to do other things in the morning. This way I get the important news and don't have to suffer through listening to Sid and Max. Mona, by the way, should get some sort of Lifetime Achievement Medal for his amazing kindness and patience towards Sid. The Great One would drive most men to drink if they worked with him. (Apparently he uses his walker to knock people out of his way when entering a room.)

Sid remembers when Ol' Blue Eyes was a top 40 artist...

Please. Sid was already in his late 20's early 30s by the time Sinatra gained his most fame. He was probably rolling his eyes at the young teens of the time swooning over this vaguely ethnic crooner.
