If we sweep Purdue, we win the regular season title for the second straight year. I don't think we will, but that's the deal. 2-1 may be good enough where only a sweep by Nebraska would do us in, although they play really bad Penn St this week. Proud of the guys for gutting it out again and playing some good ball. Too bad we couldn't steal that first one against Long Beach, would have gone a long way towards the NCAAs.

Need to avoid playing Indiana in the first round.

Need to avoid playing Indiana in the first round.

Could see any of those top 6 winning the tournament. Bottom 2 seeds whoever they are (Northwestern/Purdue/Michigan State/Illinois, etc.) would do well in tournament if they just won 1 game.

Gophers could be interesting case for Selection Committee

Selection Committee will have an interesting decision to make about the Gophers if they win regular-season title & then go 2 & out (or even 1-2) in the Big Ten Tournament like they did last year. RPI & resume won't be as strong as it was last year (low 50's) when the same thing happened.

Gophers probably played softest conference schedule in the Big Ten. ... no Iowa, Maryland, or Michigan, and it's very possible they will have played series vs. all 5 teams that don't make the tournament. Even if they win the regular season title, I'd guess they need to record at least 2 top-50 type wins in Bloomington (Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Nebraska) to have a chance at an at-large berth. There's just not much on the resume either in the non-conference or conference. The only 2 NCAA-caliber teams they played in the Big Ten (Indiana, Nebraska) they lost both series.

That's why with a RPI currently sitting at #69, they need to win the regular-season title outright, preferably with a sweep of Purdue. It's not much with the schedule they played, but if nothing else it might be difficult politically for the Selection Committee to not select the Big Ten regular-season champion.

I think even if they sweep Purdue, it may be hard to get in the NCAA tourney, unless they win a couple games in the Big Ten tourney. Maybe a conference title would be enough but I have my doubts.

I think the only way they get into the tournament is win the B1G tournament. RPI and SOS is just too weak even if they win the regular season.

This year's Gophers remind of 2011 Michigan State. Shared the Big Ten regular season title with Illinois, had shaky resume/SOS/RPI, and then didn't get a sniff (deservedly so) from NCAA after losing in championship round to Illini.

They could throw us a bone for hosing the softball team. Wouldn't that be something?
