Yes, my memory of dumping Angry Goldy is that it was largely a response to the basketball rape scandal.

Unless you have something legitimately real and terrifying like a live buffalo or tiger prowling the sidelines -- something unique, cute/friendly, and with a good costume is great. IMO Minnesota and Wisconsin have the best mascots in the conference on those grounds. Sparty's cool too because he's got a great costume. The others have ugly or creepy costumes, are trite, or are weird representations of humans.
