Arguably the strangest college football story of the past few years -- even if tangentially related -- is nearing a close.

Orlando Ricardo Thompson has been convicted of second-degree murder after fatally stabbing former Florida State mascot Caleb Joshua Halley in 2015 over an argument involving spices in a gumbo recipe. Thompson now potentially faces life in prison. Sentencing for the second-degree murder charge is set for May 4, according to the New York Post.

The argument that resulted in Halley's death took place at Buddy's Seafood Market in Panama City Beach, Florida, and involved a decorative sword. Halley who portrayed FSU's mascot Chief Osceola from 2004-07, died in the hospital two days after being slashed.

"Justice for Josh has been served, but it doesn't bring him back," a spokesman for Halley's family told the Post. "We suffered the loss of a brilliant young man. Josh just touched so many lives."
