1. The offensive line needs to get healthy. It will happen, but the team had just five healthy linemen today. Three key guys are out with injury in Vincent Calhoun, Garrison Wright and Jared Wayler. Exasperating problems is the fact Connor Mayes and Tyler Moore transferred. The unit has struggled for consistency for a number of years. New line coach Ed Warinner is one of the best in business and should be able to whip this group into shape after a good run at Ohio State.

2. The quarterbacks have potential. Conor Rhoda and Demry Croft both had their moments on this day. Croft throws a nice ball, showing touch and accuracy on a deep pass to Rashad Still on the day’s first play. Don’t expect a decision to be made on a starter until training camp, as Minnesota has turned the page on the Mitch Leidner era. Without a doubt, the Golden Gophers need more playmaking ability from the signal-caller position.

3. The secondary needs to come together. With guys like Jalen Myrick and Damarius Travis gone, among others, there are stars to replace. Keep an eye on the cornerbacks. Kiondre Thomas and Antonio Shenault look good. Coney Durr is out, but has potential, too. I like safeties Duke McGhee and Antoine Winfield Jr., who could be a special player. McGhee is a big hitter. The suspension of KiAnte Hardin hurts. This has been one of the Big Ten’s most underrated sets of defensive backs in recent years, but it has a lot to prove.

4. More difference-makers are needed at wideout. Rashad Still is a rangy target who made some plays today. And Tyler Johnson is another long wideout who had his moments, as well. But who else will emerge? It didn’t help that emerging tight end Brandon Lingen was out with injury.

5. The linebackers are the strength of the defense. Keep an eye on Carter Coughlin, who is playing a hybrid end/linebacker spot called “R.” Jonathan Celestin is a savvy vet and leader, while Thomas Barber is tenacious and smart for a defense that has some questions up front and in the back end.

Go Gophers!!

Those ARE some exasperating problems .

Next man up! We'll likely have 10 more offensive linemen come August. They all have the summer to improve, like 20? fall practices, and a pretty winnable first game to sort it out. And the best line coach in the business with a really good guy coaching tackles and tight ends. Gonna be just fine.

The most impressive part is getting all the names right. Baby steps - so big!

For people on the "inside" who follow the team avidly, none of this is new, or news. But, BTN and the national outlets are not aiming at die-hard fans - they're aiming at a regional or national audience. And a good % of that regional or national audience doesn't know squat about Gopher FB. So, an article like this - that has people on this board going "ho, hum" is actually informative for someone who doesn't know anything about the team.

it would be like someone on this board reading an article about an SEC team. Nothing new to a die-hard fan, but potentially interesting for the casual fan.

What's the prognosis with the lineman currently injured? Freshmen and transfers aside, of the current OL injuries, are most expected to be healthy by camp? Some? All? How many are injured?

I asked the same question and never heard anything. Barring an ACL or post-concussive syndrome they have 4 months to heal up. Should be fine on the line unless 2015 type Armageddon happens.

Fleck said every injured guy would be back by fall camp.

I'm probably minority here, but I've never been concerned about QB play. I loved some of the intangibles Mitch brought to the table and from a leadership stand point he did everything right and won a lot of games here, a kid who truly maximized his abilities and became more than what he was ever suppose to be in his career here. With that said when the lights shined brightest, he just didn't have the goods, there were the end zone picks vs Penn State and Wisconsin and the pick at the end vs Nebraska. Those three plays cost us at least two wins this year. I've always liked Croft's skill set, it's his third year in the program, the offense seems catered to him IMO opinion, mobile, strong arm, it's his time to shine, Rhoda has proven be an okay back up, but I would not want to go war with him every Saturday in the Big ten. Croft might take his lumps at times, but there's no reason he can't be more productive than Leidner, he has the talent. I think to borrow a Fleckism, the front seven is elite, great linebackers and there's still a lot of talent on the interior. Coughlin seems perfect to come off the edge and bull rush. WR's, there's always been talent, but I think we will have an offense that is more WR friendly, tough to know what you have there when blocking is more valued than pass catching. Lingren and Woz are a nice 1-2 at TE. Great RB core, the o-line I am concerned about passed the first group, there will be injuries there no matter what you're philosophy is. Secondary, I like the first five of McGhee, Winfield, Thomas, Durr and Shinolt, but it get dicey afeter that. Losing Hardin and Buford really hurts this team. Hopefully some of the incoming freshman there are ready to go, some nice pieces coming in 2018, but that doesn't help us now.

They may be "fine" but not where they want to be. They'll have 13 guys on the OL this fall, which is still about 5 short of where he likes to have his OL depth. Said that in one of the spring media scrums.

Every year there are questions on every team in the nation. Thin position groups or lack of experience. Obviously can always use more depth but it's not close to a catastrophe...yet. Injuries are the wildcard.

For some reason, this is really hard to understand for some people.

Please tell me that comment is based on how he played last year and not how he looked in spring. I hope someone gets through to these guys that getting targeting calls isn't the end goal of tackling, and I would hope no one is hitting hard enough to be noticeable in intersquad competition, that's just plain dumb.

McGhee has to miss the first half of the Buffelo game because of a targeting call in the last minute of the WSU game.
