Ciarrocca said he knew Fleck was special from the very beginning and was willing to leave his East Coast coaching roots in Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey to join Fleck in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Fleck felt the same about Ciarrocca. He considers Ciarrocca to be one of his best friends and gives him near autonomy in play-calling. Ciarrocca will consult with run-game coordinator/offensive line coach Ed Warinner, the former co-offensive coordinator at Ohio State, and the rest of the offensive assistants, before making the final decision. Fleck plans to assist on crucial downs.

“(Ciarrocca’s) always one step ahead; that’s what I’ve always loved about him,” Fleck said. “He’s not an offensive coordinator that just calls plays; he calls plays for a reason.”

Ciarrocca’s no-huddle offense prides itself on a balanced approach that will look for big plays by getting running backs Rodney Smith and Shannon Brooks to the second level as well as off of play-action passes.

Ciarrocca’s and Fleck’s core tenet is utmost care of the football. During Western Michigan’s 13-1 season in 2016, the Broncos led the nation with only eight giveaways.
