Go Gophers!!

Now, if they had a fake photo of Sam Gilbert in an "M" jacket standing next to Wooden...

Lew Alcindor and Bill Walton sure as hell weren't coming to Minnesota, so would Wooden have truly been Wooden without arguably the two greatest college centers ever, had he taken the Gophers job? I don't think so.

Alcindor/Abdul-Jabbar has said multiple times that growing up in NYC he wanted to live in a culturally-rich and diverse area, which absolutely wasn't Minneapolis in the late-60s. For proof, look to how much he hated being in Milwaukee as a pro, and how he forced his way out to LA within a few years. Walton was a Southern California guy from San Diego who embraced (and still embraces) the counter-culture movement. His move to the cold and staid Upper Midwest to attend college is unthinkable.

Dang winter storm knocking out power lines and ruining our chance to become a blue blood.

per Shama:

Another feature in the issue included “what if” scenarios for various prominent sports figures, imagining different outcomes in their careers. Included was a photo of legendary college basketball coach John Wooden wearing a Gophers jacket. Back in the 1950s Wooden chose UCLA over the Gophers when Minnesota officials called him later than he anticipated because of a snowstorm and telephone issues. Wooden had already accepted the UCLA job and chose not to go back on his word, even though he was attracted to Minnesota including because of his Midwestern roots.
