Just putting together a list of names I have seen on GH in no particular order - some (maybe most) are NO CHANCE.

So there actually is a rumor on another board that someone heard from a student manager that a forward from Minnesota may transfer here for his graduate year. Kyle Washington from Cincy is the first guy that comes to mind as he'd be in his 5th year next year and has one year of eligibility left. Apparently some of the players have started talking about it to. Some of them are wishfully thinking it could be Travis but I would think its more likely than not that it takes him more than 3 years to graduate Stanford.

Just a rumor thats been passed along by a few people though. I wouldn't get your hopes up.
 

You need to ad Freeman from Baylor. The rock in my shoe is that we need a guy who can play now, whether he is a two or a five. The team is not deep enough to afford a sit out transfer or a project freshman.

The grad transfers are hitting the market like crazy. Lots of shooting guards from smaller schools. Peyton Banks, who beat the Gophers at Penn State with a later three, is also available.

Pitino has proven himself to be a good recruiter in these situations, and definitely has a success story to tell with Akeem. Great opportunity.
 

My preference

1. Grad transfer SG that will take pressure off of Harris as a freshman

2. Grad transfer center or big that would be an upgrade over Konate

3. HS big like Clifton Moore that could maybe push Konate out of the rotation

4. Grad transfer SF that would either beat out Fitz if he isn't healthy enough or would push Fitz to PF and Curry to center on the bench, someone like McIntosh although it sounds like he is staying at ISU.

Interesting rumour as both Travis and Washington are probably better than Murphy but it's not like he's a guy you feel fine just telling to come off the bench. Our bugs are 3rd team all conference and DPOY so both should rightfully expect to start next year and it could be a potential chemistry issue. Personally I'd love to see a freshman wing or big if any are available

I tend to agree, keeping momentum going is tantamount and we need more depth up front if we're going to make a run in tourney next year. Another one and done appearance would be extremely disappointing. The time is now imho
 

It has to be a quality backup for Reggie we can't let his foul trouble cost us games next year , because it could be s special season
 

Nwankwo averaged 9.4 PPG, 8.0 RPG and 1.78 BPG in 15 games for Southern Idaho Junior College. He's up to 6-9, 235.

I don't know if he'd be an upgrade over Konate or not. If he is, I suppose he'd be an ok bridge between Reggie and Oturu at center.
 

Guards win championships. Oregon great guards. South Carolina great guards. Gonzaga great guards.

Adding another good SG like Freeman could win this team a B1G championship next year and a deep tournament run to go along with it.

I think Murphy would still start if Washington comes here.

If its Travis which I doubt, he would probably be our best player but it would almost feel like we'd have too much talent. I don't really like the idea of Murphy having to come off the bench and I also feel that could be a chemistry issue.
 

I am not sure "extra" should be used when describing this scholarship. We were thin last year because at least 3 scholarships were being used by players Pitino did not trust to play and another by a guy who was out for the year. I think how this scholarship is used is pretty important for the next couple of years of Gopher hoops given that we don't know how Fitzgerald will come back, we don't know if Hurt is a rotation guy, and Diehiou is still on scholarship. That's 4 scholarships (including the open one) that we could theoretically get very little on court contribution from.

If we add another SG grad transfer, you might as well start the McBrayer transfer thread. He took a big step this year and was a great teammate moving to the 6 man role. I expect more progression from him which should lock him in as a starter. #1 priority should be a backup to Lynch (grad or fresh). #2 should be a knock down SG willing to come off the bench.

Why? I already consider Dupree as a lock to be a starter. The reason most of us want a SG is so Harris doesn't have to have a huge role next year if he isn't ready. If we did bring in a grad transfer at SG, with the exception of Elijah Brown, they would backup Dupree.
 

3 point specialist or backup for Lynch. Lean toward latter. If Lynch gets hurt, we are in trouble.

How many grad transfers came off the bench for any of the sweet sixteen teams? Not sure you'll find a quality transfer willing to be a backup. Just ask Springs brother.

Amen to your first statement! Forget about "balancing classes" and having a redshirt for the future (unless another scholarship opens up). The future is now! Make a biggest splash you can next year and worry about the future after that. The cupboard won't be bare anyway. If these past two years should have taught Pitino anything, it's that you can't be confident in the health and stability of your roster numbers. Get insurance!

Like you, I'm almost indifferent to the position of the replacement player. You mentioned Peyton Banks. There is another former PSU player who transferred from South Florida and will be a grad transfer: Geno Thorpe. He is a combo guard who was South Florida's big scorer. He's not listed as a grad transfer by Verbal Commits but I read him say that he will graduate.

Well Springs came off the bench for the entire first half of the season and Malik Smith also came off the bench. With the exception of the higher end ones like Brown, I feel like most that end up transferring to a bigger program do come off the bench and are content with a smaller role if it means playing on a better team in a better conference.

Yeah, yeah, guards "win championships" until they run into a team with a very talented and deep frontcourt like the Florida team that won back-to-back championships last decade. This year's UNC team also starts only one true guard right now but good luck getting a rebound away from their front court.

Oregon's lead guard has been good in recent games but their two biggest stars are forwards.

That was a long time ago. A lot of teams win playing small ball now. UNC is the exception this year. I was thinking Brooks on Oregon was a guard but he is a SF. He and Dorsey are their best players right now.

Brining in another guard would be similar to what Gonzaga did with Jordan Matthews from Cal and that's worked out pretty well. They could have just went with Williams-Goss and Josh Perkins and Perkins scoring as taken a small step back this year. Even though Gonzaga has some pretty good bigs, they still play 4 guards 24 min+.
 

It doesn't make sense to me how people think we need another big. I just won't ever understand it.

A grad Transfer big isn't coming here to play 8 minutes per game.

It doesn't do any good to have 4.5 playable bigs. Gophers have 3.5 playable ones as it is, which is a fine.

At most, teams can have two bigs on the floor. They can have as many as four perimeter guys at any one time. Give me 6 playable perimeter guys and 3.5 bigs over 5 playable perimeter guys and 4.5 bigs any day.
 

I really wish Gaston was good enough to transfer somewhere. I bet if we had two scholarships we could flip Mckinley and John. Or Sims and Mckinley
 

This guy is transferring from Uconn. Steven Enoch, a 6-10, 245 pound big. He'd have to sit out a year and then would have two years to play. He just followed our new football commit Logan Richter on twitter and Kimani Young and Matt Jessen Howard also follow him, whatever thats worth.

Really doubt it's a grad transfer. Would lead to a real imbalance in our scholarships. Unless there is a guy who would be a no doubt major difference maker that's not smart

All things being equal, it's still a big man's game and 10 years isn't very long at all. The game hasn't changed much since then. Basketball isn't like high tech communications technology.

Dorsey has been very good in this tournament but Bell and Brooks are the guys expected to be drafted. For some reason, there has been a long time lag in developing enough high quality big men but that situation might be improving. But, I'll still take Lebron James in his prime over Steph Curry in his prime any day of the week.

That's nonsense. The reality is that the future is now and each team can expect one or two transfers each year. "Balance" is for gymnasts. Do you think Calipari, Coach K, or Bill Self ever worry about "balancing" their scholarships between classes?
 

I luv GH. In this thread we worry about having too much talent and balancing classes. In another thread we have 50 pages worrying bout where Pitino is going next. Amazing what people over-speculate about.

My 2cents...... this team lacked someone to sub in when lynch or Murphy were in foul trouble. They have to replace Springs also. Can't have enough big guys. I'd rather have a transfer big guy and hope the 2 freshmen guards can play

Get who you can to win now. I like the trajectory of the team's recruiting and the thought of having yet another scholarship open with the potential classes coming up in a year or two may pay bigly in the future.
