Fleck on KFAN #92noon

Even more negative than he was on Sid. Coyle has to be cringing. No reason to renew season tickets really from what I hear him saying.

Basically, sounds like we should forget about 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Fleck says we lost a lot of seniors, have a lot of depth problems, team will have to learn offense, defense, special teams.

Have to learn culture.

He says we Need a lot of patience. Lot of work to do.

Team also has to adjust to new coaches, new style, new culture.

Don't worry about winning games. Worry about process. Long way to go.

Need help from alums, media, community.

Haven't won for 50 years.

Won't happen overnight. Not in one season or two seasons.

Says he wants to recruit guys that don't need convincing. Wants guys that want to be here. That see it as a fit.

Says he only had two weeks to recruit 2017 class, so really, look to 2018, 2019.

Says only has five offensive linemen. Says only one underclass dt.

They need to stop letting him talk. Find someone with some positivity.

Someone who embraces the how of how close this team was in 2014 and 2016 to winning the west. Someone who can sell the idea that with a little more sideline motivation, with a little better s and c work, with two great oline coaches, with two great wr coaches, with an actual quarterback whisperer that we can make the next step. Someone who can say how tough the schedule was in 2015 but how close the team was to beating TCU, Michigan. Point out that this team, this program, is so close and if we can just get a few pieces to click and stay healthy we can be really good, not just close.

He acknowledged he has great rbs and great lbs. He acknowledge the kids have shown great willingness to learn, adapt, lead, change.

They need to stop him from talking about five olinemen in April and get Warinner talking about some of his past successes and how excited he is to get to September and have Weyler, Greene, Wright, Calhoun as experienced vets with size, strength, maturity. How he is eager to work with Upper classmen Connelly, Dovich, Oseland who got feet wet and with good looking redshirts like Olson and Schlueter. Maybe mention How happy they are Andries stayed home and how much they like Sassack and Schmitz.

Instead of Fleck talking about how bad the program is, maybe let Norries talk about great APR, great stadium, great facilities. Let Norries talk about character team developed, bonds they formed while dealing with losing Jerry to epilepsy, being left leaderless and lame ducked because of Norwood, about overcoming overzealous EOAA. Maybe have the NFL scout guy they brought in to be personnel guy talk about all the NFL talent turned out since 2014 with more to come in 2017 instead of having Fleck talk about depth issues and how many holes there are.

Instead of letting Fleck talk about 2020, have Burns talk about coaching two 1,000 yard backs in 2017 and great depth with McCrary cleared. Or have Callahan speak on getting Lingen to the NFL in 2017 and having big Woz work into a bigger role in 2017 or how Beebe fits their h back role perfectly or they really like the howpher of Witham and Kieft and how great te recruiting went.

or let hometown kid speak on Simon turning Still and or others into NFL rcvrs in 2017 and 2018, how they have had all frosh WRs every year, that they had two stars and made them NCAA leading rcvrs. Maybe instead of letting Fleck whine about QB experience, point out all the QB successes Ciarrocca has had at Delaware, Rutgers, WMU with guys he had no prior experience with...coaching freshman all American at Rutgers.

Fleck is going to scare off ticket buyers and any chance of creating a home field advantage with his multi season rebuilding talk. Need to market The rebuild is over. The next step taking is here.

Instead of lettting Fleck go on about the number of underclass def tackles in April, let Paup talk about putting guys from Northern Iowa in the NFL and how eager he is to work with four good, looking def tackles in Rich, Stelt, Merrick and Moore...plus all the great recruits coming in June, including a juco all American. Let Smith talk to Sid about all the lbs he put in the NFL and the lbs he coached in the NFL and how he likes Celestine and Poock in 2017 as NFL prospects.

Instead of allowing Fleck go on about the holes in the secondary, maybe get coach mo on with PA to talk about the level of talent in the SEC he saw and how Minnnesota has a tradition and culture established in recent years of getting dbs drafted that matches the best and how Jalen and Myrick will continue that and how he thinks All frosh Winfield, experienced vets McGhee and Ayinde and speedy corners Shenault, Kiondre, and Craighton look good. Maybe have him mention how they shut down the highly touted Wazzu passing game despite all the suspensions and Durr injury. Maybe have him talk about the great recruiting class.

Coyle or somebody neeeds to teach Fleck about connecting with people in a positive way.

They need to stop letting him talk. Find someone with some positivity.

Find someone with some positivity? Do you know who PJ Fleck is?

The things he lays out are facts. Just because you don't like them doesn't make them not true and doesn't mean he's saying the program is bad.

This has never been a situation to realistically expect Big Ten and national championships in year 1. If you thought that, you're fooling yourself. And if you think that's the only way to improve ticket sales, you're fooling yourself.

This is a coach that improved attendance by almost 20 percent in his first season to watch a team whose win total dropped from 4 to 1.

There's more talk around the program now than there has been in years. There's more buzz. And regardless of how ticket sales wind up this year, this hiring is more than about 2017. He wasn't signed to a 1-year contract.

Sure, it'd be nice if Sid and Dave stopped asking such stale questions. But that's what you're going to get this time of year in a coach's first season at a new school. There's no reason for Kaler or Coyle to be worried at this point that they made a bad hire or that people won't buy tickets. Not. Even. Close.

So, collectively as a fanbase, we have gone from mocking this man for talking about championships (comparing him to Brewster) to saying he's too negative (pretty much comparing him to Kill)...all in less than 3 months! It's funny that he has basically taken on the persona of "Fleck-ites" on this board (myself included). Although, most of the 'negativity' was merely reciting fact.

I did enjoy the long post, though. I didn't agree with its main theory, but it was an interesting read. At first I thought it was just standard trolling, but swingman appears to be an actual Gopher fan (or has done a disturbing amount of research into one of his rivals).

I don't think there is any more buzz about the team than when Kill was hired, and possibly less than when Brew was hired. The buzz when Brewster was hired and started talking and promoting was crazy.

So Fleck is negative? That is scary.

There is a baseball team in town that has been the most positive organization in this state despite years of historically bad seasons. I saw the "home field advantage" they had last year. Winning sells far more tickets than positive hype.

Also, the rebuild is far from over. We haven't beat Wisconsin since the first term of the second Bush Administration. This program has a very long way to go. I'll still be attending games and supporting them, but I refuse to look at this program as if all the pieces are in place.

Glad he told us all this stuff before the Season Ticket deadline.

If people bought tickets because of what Fleck said before they're not changing their mind over this... I mean who is waiting for the coach to talk before buying tickets?

Guys, guys, guys, the last sentence:

Coyle or somebody neeeds to teach Fleck about connecting with people in a positive way.

This is expert level trolling. Well done.

Good point. Better listen first huh? :D

Fleck doesn't get the luxury bottoming out here like he did his first year at Western. this isn't the MAC and we only lost 13 total seniors and only expulsion of consequence is Hardin from a nine win team. I'll say it's fair to expect a small step back, but this season with the amount of talent we do have will be an extreme utter failure if we don't at least go to a bowl game. With our schedule,no excuse for not winning 6-7 games. If this team wins three or four Fleck can take his Fleckism's and shove him where the sun don't shine. This isn't a rebuild job, Kill, Claeys and co left this program on much better footer than they inherited it.

Instead of letting Fleck talk about 2020, have Burns talk about coaching two 1,000 yard backs in 2017 and great depth with McCrary cleared.

Fleck spent time in this interview talking about his 2 star RB's and the incredible depth at this position. It helps to pay attention sometimes.

Whoa. Take it easy dude.

Yes, this is a rebuild job (for the reasons Fleck stated that are facts) and Yes, Kill, Claeys and co left this program on much better footing than they inherited.

This is not a rebuilding job, Fleck said so himself. If you honestly believe this is a rebuilding job do everyone a favor and never post here again.

In PJF folklore he will always have inherited a disaster here. If he fails, who can blame him. If he raises it from ashes he is a savior. No one will know for 5 years or longer. What could he be expected to do with the pile of crap he inherited.

Some will eat whatever PJF feeds them. The others are haters and don't get it.

What is he feeding fans that isn't true? He never said it was a rebuild. He did however say it's going to take a couple of years to get the program where he wants it which is competing for championships. Nothing wrong with that. Yes, believe it or not some people actually don't like Fleck example number one would be the first poster on this thread.

Any coach worth their weight is going to set low expectations in year one of a new job. Nothing to see here.

I don't know if this should be a separate thread - but which new Gopher coach inherited the best situation?

In general, when a team makes a coaching change, it's because of some issues or perceived deficiencies in the program. So, unless a long-time coach is retiring on good terms, a coaching change usually means some turnover on the roster. When Holtz bolted for NDame, he took a bunch of recruits with him, and left the Gophers in a less-than-ideal situation.

As I see it, yes, the Gophers have some depth issues. they can't afford a lot of injuries on the OL or DL. And, they need to sort out the QB situation. BUT, the Gophers return solid players at RB, TE, LB and several experienced DB's. There is a pretty solid nucleus there to build around. At the very least, this team should be able to win 6 or 7 games and go to a bowl game. With a little luck and good health, I could see this team winning 8 games.

After that, it all depends on recruiting, and how fast some of the new recruits will be able to play and contribute. In a perfect world, I'd love to see the Gophs get into a situation where they can redshirt every recruit - but realistically, a program like the Gophs is going to need some young players to contribute - or, if Fleck can really recruit, bring in a FR who is so talented that he earns a spot in the lineup.
Fleck will have some challenges in managing the roster, but that's why he gets the big bucks. I certainly don't see the Gophers as being in some hopeless situation where losing is inevitable for the next two years.

This is not a rebuilding job, Fleck said so himself. If you honestly believe this is a rebuilding job do everyone a favor and never post here again.

So you disagree with Swingman (and PJF) on "Says only has five offensive linemen. Says only one underclass dt." and the FACT that we have to find a starting quarterback?

Just because it's a rebuild compared to a 9 win season doesn't mean this is a ground-up rebuild. Go for false dichotomies much?

Dead on. In a separate thread I gave my mid-point for wins predicted at 7.5 with a swing of 1.5 on either end (hard to win fewer than 6 and special season if we win 10).

Sorry, I think I just figured out how to respond to two quotes in one post, so I'll do that next time.
