Springs Injury

Hurt just doesn't provide anything at this point. I'm sure it will click....but as of right now....I'd hope that Gilbert and Sharpe see some of those minutes.

Was it sharpe that actually had some serviceable minutes last year?

and what are those?

Since you asked, I was going by the way he stepped just before he went down, the fact that he couldn't put any weight on it as he left the court and the fact that he came back to the bench on crutches with an ice pack on his Achilles.

With Dorsey, Mason, and McBrayer out, he was forced into a starting role, and yeah, he was pretty solid for a true freshman walk-on playing out of position. We played him at point, but I believe he's more of a shooting guard, so he could maybe fill in for Springs for a few minutes.

Yes he did, I'd be very comfortable seeing him check into the game here and there. Certainly not Akeem Springs, but I have actually seen Sharpe produce at this level, so it's the best option. And to the post that referenced Jarvis Johnson - OMG would that kid be HUGE on this team. Such a shame that young man isn't allowed to compete.

Sharpe is a driver not a shooter. Springs added the ability to shoot. Hurt has that potential. A kid on the roster that looks like he really can shoot it is Rudrud. But I think Pitino is going to encourage Hurt to step up and play with confidence. Hurt plays defense. He just needs to get some confidence on offense.

I assume we don't have anything difinitive yet on springs injury?

Rudrud looked like a scorer in his brief stint vs Nebraska. Looked confident. Only time I've seen him. We know Hurt's limitations. Gilbert can't defend. So if Rudrud can score he may see the floor because not much positive happens with Hurt and Gilbert. We do still have 7 effective players. Hopefully, Michigan hits a wall and just runs out of gas for a stretch...extra game, travel scare, late arrival, and their Purdue game was a struggle. I'm confident or is it hopeful ha Mason will shoot better.

Springs posted on Instagram he is done for season. Not sure how to embed from mobile!

Awful news and timing. I think Gilbert and Hurt will be serviceable but our odds of getting to the second weekend just took a big hit

I love Akeem and am just sick about this. Feel so bad for him that his college eligibility ends so abruptly, and he won't get to enjoy the fruits of his hard work this year. This team wouldn't be here without him.

We've dodged the injury bullet all season. In addition to his scoring, Akeem brings so many intangibles. Fortunately, we will still have his leadership from the bench.

It'll be very interesting to see what Pitino does with the shortened lineup. Thats 28 minutes that Springs played. He cannot give many more minutes to Mason, he averages 35 or so. McBrayer can probably add 5-8 minutes easily as he was playing 30+ in the beginning of the season. That leaves at a minimum 20 minutes to spread out amongst the rest of the team. I'd be curious if he gives some guard minutes to Coffey and tries a couple different "bigger" lineups by having Murphy Curry and Konate/Lynch on the court at the same time.

Offensively, while Springs was a threat, he wasn't producing the last couple of games. He was a very reliable defender however and rarely got beaten. We'll see what Pitino cooks up. It's a game we cannot get into foul trouble down low as that's a lot of lineup issues to ask a coach to manage.

Fitz was lost for the season.

Feel awful for Springs. That guy always gave it his all. He made some big time buckets for this team.

I feel horrible for him.

Yeah it didn't look bad at all on TV, but it's gotta be an Achille's, and Springs' Gopher playing career ended on that play. The young man will heal up before long, but as for the team, they'll be without him her on out. The team and we fans will miss his court presence!

McBrayer and Coffey will pick up some more minutes - they'll have to. And then Gilbert / Hurt / Sharpe / Rudrud? will fill in the remaining guard minutes. I can imagine one of those guys turning into the "Spike Albrecht" of the team. It should be Hurt, but he's still lacking in confidence. But if he's (or any of those guys) are forced into this role, I can see him stepping up and playing solidly.

This seems daunting, and is. We'll see how the team responds. Three injuries in that game - Murphy (ankle) and Lynch (mouth/tooth) in addition to the awful Springs injury.

As to how this forwards into next year, I was already lamenting the loss of Akeem, but that allows minutes for Jelly and a young shooter to add to the rotation. Team success next year will depend on progress of the other players and on how good Jelly really is. Oh, and I forgot about Fitzgerald too...

I'm very happy with 24 W's this season. Any more are just gravy. Keep up the effort, do it for the fallen teammate!

Wow, that's such an awesome attitude! I'm pumped - put me in coach! :p

If Sharp gets any PT, I'm looking elsewhere if I'm Gilbert (not saying it would be wrong, either). It would be quite the vote of no confidence.

Lol...we are really debating whether Rudrud will see time. He will not see the floor unless we only have 4 available players.

Thank you - the rotation just gets one man shorter.

Pitino said he thinks Springs' injury could be a torn Achilles. "Not looking good." He said #Gophers should rally around him -- Marcus

Pitino already knows it is a destroyed Achilles tendon, he is just keeping it quiet for now. The trainers and on site Doctors on staff needed about 30 seconds to determine it as bad. The only reason Springs got up and walked a bit and looked unshaken behind the bench is that he is one mentally tough guy. Springs knows he will not be playing any basketball for about 6 or 8 mnoths if the tendon really did roll up to his calf.

That was so bad. I really felt like Hurt would be a blue

I was shouting at the TV like the old Clem days when I saw Hurt put out that timid effort on the loose ball. The MSU guy just dove in and took it away. To Richard's credit, he pulled him right away and I do not think we say Hurt again.

I feel terrible for Akeem, it would be amazing if he actually has the positive outlook his Instagram post suggests right now. As a fan, I feel like I owe a lot to Akeem. If he didn't choose to become a Gopher, we wouldn't be having this season. Having this breakthrough year doesn't just effect this year, but the future of the program as well. Things like the Oturu commitment and feature articles in major papers about "our" program would likely not have occurred if Akeem chose a different school. He's been praised by Pitino and the other players for his leadership and it certainly sounds like he's had an effect not just on the floor but on the mindset and work ethic of the team. Pitino mentioned in a recent coaches show that Akeem came in and was vocal in film sessions asking questions and how many of the players were not like that (didn't know or feel comfortable interrupting if they were unsure on something), but after seeing Akeem do it others became more vocal. Just a small story of one area off the court where just his presence changed things.

The other side of this is how brutal this injury is for the Gophers. We had 3 guards, now we have 2. We lost our only guard with the size/strength to matchup with certain opponents. We lost our best 3 point shooter. This team had 7 players you felt comfortable with having in the game: Mason, Springs, Coffey, Murphy, Lynch, McBrayer, and Curry...now it has 6. There's no margin for error in the backcourt at all any more. Foul trouble for either Mason or McBrayer? screwed. Off shooting night or bad decision making for either Mason or McBrayer? screwed.

The loss of the 3rd guy in the gangbang video incident from last year from Fairfax VA had not been felt all year due to the great play by Springs. This injury is now going to hurt because for all his limitations, the kid that left could handle the ball, guard quick players, and drive to the hoop. I wished he had stayed as did the other two.

Next year it will not matter, but now we will feel the loss. McBrayer is playing better, but with limited depth, fatigue and foul trouble now are an issue. I hope the two guys previously mentioned can fill in for a few minutes as needed. (local kid and #32)
