Gophers baseball and football have a freshman two-sport player — Drew Hmielewski of Marshall, Minn. — already reminiscent of Eric Decker, the former Gophers baseball-football standout from Cold Spring-Rocori who is a star wideout for the New York Jets.

Hmielewski, a chiseled 6-2, 205 pounds, physically resembles Decker, who a few years ago took part in a GQ Magazine photo shoot with wife Jessie James.

The baseball scouting report on Hmielewski is that he has high upside. He hasn’t played baseball for the Gophers because he was redshirted last season while recovering from shoulder surgery.

Minnesota recruited Hmielewski hard for baseball, and after he ran a 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds at ex-Gophers coach Kill’s football camp, Minnesota offered a football tender.

Another Gophers football player, freshman kick holder and backup punter Jacob Herbers from Battle Creek, Mich., also is on the Gophers baseball team as a first baseman. Herbers had a standout football season holding for star kicker Emmit Carpenter. Herbers is a walk-on.
