Notes of Zach Johnson's (GI) interview with Dave Mona and Mike Max before the P.J. Fleck segment.
• Zack said Fleck and his staff did a good job recruiting given the short time-table that they had when they were hired.
• According to Johnson, the Gopher coaches did a good job filling their needs at WR (3) and DB (3).
• Western Michigan had 24 players committed when Fleck left for Minnesota and they flipped 9 players.
• Johnson said Minnesota in recent years has recruited athletes for the quarterback position; whereas Tanner Morgan is a true quarterback.
• Johnson mentioned Neil McLaurin, JUCO quarterback from SW Mississippi CC, who was signed and enrolled by the previous staff. Zack said Neil is athletic and runs a 4.4 forty. He could move to another position, according to Zack Johnson.
• Dave Mona asked about offensive and defensive line recruits that signed with Minnesota. Johnson said the defensive line is stocked for the 2017 season; however, there’ll be a great need after the season because of graduations and having only one junior on the defensive side of the ball. The Gophers signed 3 defensive linemen and it is a position(s) (defensive tackles and defensive ends) that will be emphasized in 2018 recruiting. The Gophers signed three offensive linemen.
• Only 6 offensive linemen will be participating in spring ball because of injuries requiring surgery.
• Zack Johnson spoke highly of Jake Paulson a tight-end from Louisville, KY. Another tight-end that Zach mentioned is Nathan Bursch of Woodbury. He said Bursch is a very good blocker. Tight-end is a position of great flexibility and he could see some players moving to the offensive line or defensive line. (When a tight-end recruit enrolls in school at 6-5 or 6-6 and weighs 235 to 250 pounds they have the body frame to add fifty pounds or more and can make the move to the offensive or defensive lines.)
• Johnson said Dominik London of Woodbury is a running back and he does not see him playing anything other than running back.
Thanks to short ornery Norwegian (SON) for making note of Johnson’s interview on today’s Sports Huddle recap.
