Finger Lakes Times: The most diverse 2020 recruiting class so far? Look to Minnesota

The land of 10,000 Lakes, Minnesota has grown steadily more diverse as a population across recent decades. It's no longer Garrison Keillor's Lake Wobegon state, unless Lake Woebegone assimilated a sizable population of African immigrants and an influx from other states.

Now the University of Minnesota football team is doing its part. After a massive recruiting week that included 11 different commitments, the Golden Gophers now include incoming 2020 players from the following states and countries: Minnesota, Tennessee, New York, Wisconsin, Kansas, Michigan, Ohio, Texas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Missouri, Germany and the Netherlands.

As noted by 247Sports' Steve Wiltfong, Minnesota's sudden volume surge has lifted the Gophers to the No. 22 recruiting class in the country. That's impressive, but the variety of places they are pulling future players from is perhaps the most remarkable aspect of coach P.J. Fleck's early efforts.

No, none of the new Minnesota recruits are 4-star prospects, but many have alluring potential. That includes German defensive end Melle Krueder -- a 6-foot-3, 235 pound athletic beast -- and Dutch athlete Richard Agyekum. No one knows where on the field Agyekum will play, but given his athleticism he's very likely to find playing time somewhere.

That's a wide six hour perimeter.

I think that this weekend is crucial. 5 of the Gophers' most highly-rated recruits have OV's elsewhere this weekend. A 6th, Michael Rankins, just switched from "cool" to "warm". If the Gophers can land 3 of the 6; that could be a great wind-up to recruiting {barring de-commits}.

Lot of talented players seemingly still showing interest. Daniel Jackson and Cameron Martinez are at the top of my wish list. These two could really be difference makers on an offense.

Any chance CJ West gets back on board? It doesn't look like his recruitment has picked up since he decommitted.

per Sid:

• Coach P.J. Fleck and the Gophers football team brought a lot of recruits to campus recently. “This is a busy time because it’s a time for us to get live evals of 2020 recruits, but also 2021s, 2022s,” Fleck said. “It’s a very important time for us right now, and we are all over the country.” According to 247 Sports, the Gophers now rank 24th in the country in recruiting for the Class of 2020.

Harrison's Pless commits to play at Minnesota

Harrison cornerback Victor Pless is heading to the Big Ten Conference.

Pless, a Rivals three-star prospect, will play his college football at Minnesota. He said he chose the Golden Gophers because they run a defense similar to the one he has been playing in with the Hoyas.

Pless, who received 25 college offers, chose Minnesota over the likes of Boston College, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Georgia Southern, Houston, Indiana, Louisville, Syracuse and West Virginia, among others. He committed shortly after taking an official visit to Minneapolis on June 14.

Minnessota will be getting an experienced, lock-down corner in the 5-foot-10, 170-pound Pless. Harrison coach Matt Dickmann said Pless saw significant playing time beginning in his sophomore year, and he has made an impact by showing the ability to take opposing receivers out of the game.

“He can shut down somebody’s best receiver,” Dickmann said. “He’s a great cover corner.”

Pless said he considers himself a versatile corner.

“I can play man, I can play zone. I feel like I can do any type of coverage,” he said. “If I play a good team with a good receiver, I feel like I can cover them anywhere on the field.”

Dickmann said that explosiveness and good hands were other areas of strength. The three interceptions Pless made last season reflect good hands and the ability to track the ball in the air. Pless is also a good tackler, finishing the 2018 season with 62, 43 of those solo.

In addition to being a difference-maker on the field, Pless is a player of high character.

“Very coachable, very likeable young man that is great to be around” Dickmann said.

Pless said character is an important part of his makeup.

Looks like they all remain uncommitted, at least publicly.

So we have 20 commits that average a 0.8489 rating, which seems a tad low? I guess the ratings can be changed later.

Abner is one of those slightly excellent names that you don't hear anymore, like Conrad or Larry.

per Megan:

A Minnesotan is coming home.

The Gophers landed a commitment from safety Abner Dubar on Monday. The three-star recruit, according to 247Sports.com, is a product of Anna, Texas, but he was born in Robbinsdale, Minn. The 6-foot, 176-pound player is the 20th member of the Gophers’ 2020 class.

Dallas News: Anna DB Abner Dubar chooses Minnesota two months after de-committing from Texas Tech

Anna defensive back Abner Dubar committed to Texas Tech in March, but decided to re-open his recruitment just over a month later. He wrote on Twitter on April 25 that he needed more time to process his college decision.

About two months proved to be enough time for Dubar, who decided to commit to Minnesota on Monday.

Dubar announced the decision on Twitter.

Dubar, a 6-foot-1, 172-pound prospect, is a three-star prospect, according to 247Sports's composite rankings, and the No. 53 safety in the country. He also had offers from Colorado, Baylor and Houston.

Dubar recorded 61 tackles last year for an Anna team that finished 5-5. He also had 90 carries for 445 yards and two touchdowns.

Dubar is the 20th commitment in Minnesota head coach PJ Fleck's 2020 recruiting class. The Gophers, according to 247Sports, have the 24th best recruiting class in the country. Dubar is also the second Dallas-area player to commit to Minnesota, joining Mesquite quarterback Dylan McGill, who's listed as an athlete.

Wisconsin just added a 3rd OLB to their class. May be a factor in the Kaden Johnson sweepstakes.

Fleck has done a nice job addressing holes in the depth chart. Brewster could never land the stud RB, Kill struggled to build depth on the lines, especially the dline. Fleck quickly addressed the holes at QB and DLine, and now with the additions of two safeties ranked top 60 at their position he's built some depth there. Some may be disappointed in the recruiting rankings, but the all around depth at all positions appears to be really coming together.

How do we wrap up this class? It's early, but can't be too many spots left. Anyone know the # we can sign?

Targets from 247 list has a few DE on there, but hard to believe we would take any more at that postion (right?).

There is always more at one position if the recruit is elite enough.

They just added another one today, fairly high ranked guy from AZ.

Wisconsin insiders seem to think they have a pretty good shot at Kaden so it’s gonna be interesting. Not a great deal of Gopher buzz at the moment.

He just visited so they should have a lot of hype there. I'm not too worried about it yet.
