The team won nine games last season and has become a consistently successful program. But a Big Ten West title has been elusive. No doubt, Fleck will pour himself into the job and amp-up recruiting. But as he moves forward, he’ll have to do so without some key players. Here are the five top players who must be replaced from last season’s Holiday Bowl championship squad.

QB Mitch Leidner. He endured his share of ups and down in his career in Dinkytown. Leidner played in 46 career games (28-18 record) and started 40 (24-16 record as a starter). That experience was valuable. He rushed 446 times (15th all-time in school history) for 1,495 yards (third in school history for a quarterback) and 33 career touchdowns (most in school history for a quarterback, fourth for any player). He also passed for 7,287 yards (third most in school history) and 36 touchdowns (fifth in school history) and ranks fifth all-time in school history in completion percentage (56.4), second in completions (580) and second in attempts (1,029). Leidner is the only Minnesota quarterback ever to pass and rush for 30 career touchdowns and ranks second all-time in total offense with 8,882 yards.

CB Jalen Myrick. The speedy Myrick was one of the team’s top covermen and part of a strong secondary that handcuffed Washington State in a Holiday Bowl victory. In 2016, Myrick started all 13 games and recorded 38 tackles, 11 pass breakups and one interception. He also doubled as a top return man, notching 290 yards on kickoff returns and 41 yards on punt returns. He was a consensus honorable mention All-Big Ten choice in 2016.

OT Jonah Pirsig. The massive 6-9, 325-pound Pirsig was an anchor up front on a good Gopher offensive line. He started 10 games and missed three with an injury last season. Pirsig blocked for an offense that rushed for 2,387 yards and 34 touchdowns last season en route to earning consensus third-team All-Big Ten accolades.

S Damarius Travis. He was a stalwart in a stout Golden Gopher secondary that helped the team rank No. 4 in the Big Ten in total defense (348.8 ypg) in 2016. Travis started all 13 games and recorded a team-leading 81.5 tackles with seven for a loss of 20 yards. He also had two interceptions, one fumble recovery and deflected five passes to earn honorable mention All-Big Ten honors from the media.

WR Drew Wolitarsky. He was a third-team All-Big Ten pick by the media and was honorable mention by the coaches after setting career highs in catches (66), yards (860) and touchdowns (five). Wolitarsky’s 66 grabs ranked third in the Big Ten last season. He made 130 career catches (tied for eighth all-time in program history) for 1,749 yards (ninth in program history). Wolitarsky caught nine career touchdowns and ended his tenure by making a catch in 26 straight games, which is the sixth longest streak is school history.

Pirsig. Tough one. Unnamed player to be suspended later?

Damarius Travis. Buford/Hardin/D Johnson

Wolitarsky. Another tough one. Unnamed player to be suspended later?

I've been told Wolitarski is easy to replace and we had more to replace going into this season at the wideout position.

So essentially our top 5 players to replace are are top 5 seniors? Breaking news from BTN...

Sadly your list is legit and your point of them all currently being suspended and potentially not available next year is legit. You then end up with some really big question marks at all positions above (not to mention the question of center which I think might be even bigger than Pirsig - the question, not the players involved ).

With Croft, Rhoda and a JC transfer they should at least be fair at QB. Hopefully not much worse, but not likely a lot better, especially at the start of the year. The other positions I'm really worried about. None of the WR's on this team have proven they can be a reliable target. All appear to have hands of stone. DB there just aren't enough bodies. OL wasn't great last year, lose your top player and your center, tough to see it being better.

Hopefully some of the guys who were there or some of the incoming players will surprise us and we'll have a solid year next year...

Pre-Appeal replacements:
Leidner: Rhoda, Croft, McLaurin, Morgan

Myrick: Sorry, Winfield is more of a safety so the replacement for Myrick will be from Thomas, Craighton, Dipre, Creamer, Layne, Estes

Pirsig: Connely, Oseland, Sassack, Andries and maybe a few others who are OG

Travis: Ayinde, Huff, Register?, Handy-Holly, Beck

Wolitarsky: Gentry, Holland, Johnson, Hmieleweski, Register?, Howard, Mayer, VanDyne, A-Bell

Most, if not all of these guys will step in and be equally as good or better than who they are replacing.
The leadership Leidner provided will be hard to replace, but one of those QB's will emerge and can have a season similar to what we have gotten in the past from Leidner if not improve on it.
