When Merchant came back to the bench against Nebraska the announcers said Suzy was wearing a heart monitor. Hopefully they can get a handle on the problem.

Michigan State women’s basketball coach Suzy Merchant has taken a medical leave of absence.

Associate head coach Amaka Agugua will serve as the interim head coach.

Merchant remained in New Jersey following Saturday’s game at Rutgers to undergo testing at a local hospital after experiencing symptoms similar to what she felt during a Jan. 1 home game against Illinois. She missed MSU’s Jan. 4 game at Purdue but was back on the bench for the Jan. 7 game versus Nebraska.

Suzy Merchant returned to the bench today in East Lansing. The Spartans lost to Maryland and host the Gophers on Thursday.

The 10th year Michigan State women’s basketball coach made her return to the court Sunday afternoon during the Spartans’ 89-72 loss to Big Ten leader and No. 3-ranked Maryland.

Merchant had been away from the program on medical leave since Jan. 17 after experiencing symptoms during a road game against Rutgers that were similar to the ones she felt when she fainted on the sidelines during a New Year’s Day home victory over Illinois.

Merchant, who received an implant the size of a paper clip to monitor her heart, said she had been feeling better in the last week. She expressed her thanks to Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis, President Lou Anna K. Simon and others for the support she's received while away.
