SAN DIEGO – Former San Diego Police Officer, Jonathan ‘J.D.’ DeGuzman, has been named Honorary Chairman of the 2016 National Funding Holiday Bowl. The Honorary Chairman title is awarded annually to an individual who has contributed to the San Diego community in a meaningful way. DeGuzman will also be honored as Grand Marshal of the Port of San Diego Holiday Bowl Parade presented by San Diego County Credit Union.

DeGuzman was an integral part of the San Diego Police Department from October 20th, 2000 to July 28th, 2016. After 16 years of service, DeGuzman was mortally wounded in the line of duty when stopping a man in Southcrest for reasons that are still unknown. Officer DeGuzman was a husband and father of two young children. He was described as a loving, caring man who spoke of his family at any chance he could, which is why he will be represented in the parade by his wife Jane and two children.

DeGuzman was awarded the police department’s Purple Heart in 2003 after being stabbed by a man stopped for speeding, and once more was awarded with the Meritorious Service Award in March of 2016. Renowned for his sense of humor, encouraging, upbeat personality, kind words, and love for his family, he has become one of San Diego’s well-known heroes and will forever be remembered.

In honor of San Diego’s finest, this year the theme of the parade will be “Honoring Our First Responders.” The title sponsor of the Holiday Bowl game, National Funding, along with San Diego business leaders and individuals came together to raise $200,000 to purchase 8,000 game tickets that were distributed to local first responders and military...
