per Greder:

The Gophers are preparing for a wild ride in the Holiday Bowl.

The annual showcase in San Diego has a reputation for high-scoring and often close games. Last year, Wisconsin edged Southern California 23-21, with a late Badgers field goal deciding the outcome. In 2015, USC got in a shootout with Nebraska and held of the Cornhuskers to win 45-42.

“It’s had some really wild finishes to it,” Gophers coach Tracy Claeys said. “The reason you watch it a lot of times is because it is the only bowl game on, but it’s also been great entertainment.”

Go Gophers!!

If you didn't read the thread title and only looked at the shortened version of the link that Bleed posted you might be expecting a totally different story. :)

The Gophers’ placement in the Holiday Bowl was a byproduct of an 8-4 season that included three losses that came down to the last possession. Two of Minnesota’s losses were to Penn State and Wisconsin, the teams that squared off in the Big Ten Championship Game.

“We felt pretty lucky to get Minnesota,” Beathard said. “We looked at it as sort of a steal because if you look back at the four losses they had, three of those losses were one-score games and were incredibly close. … If one or two plays would have gone differently in those games, we could be talking about entirely different postseason implications for the Gophers.”

Minnesota also benefited from the high respect given to the Big Ten Conference this season. Ohio State received a spot in the College Football Playoff against Clemson, and three others will play in the “New Year’s Six,” the group of more prestigious bowls.

Penn State will play USC in the Rose Bowl; Wisconsin will play Western Michigan in the Cotton Bowl; and Michigan will play Florida State in the Orange Bowl.

“The Big Ten has a great reputation this year for everything the teams have been able to do,” Beathard said.

The Holiday Bowl match-up between the Badgers and Trojans last December drew an announced crowd of 48,329, which ended a 22-year benchmark of crowds exceeding 50,000 or sometimes 60,000.
