Shama: If MN wins Sat "it will be among the most significant upsets in the rivalry"

per Shama:

If the Gophers can win Saturday in Madison against the Badgers it will be among the most significant upsets in the rivalry that dates back to 1890. The Badgers are ranked No. 5 in the latest Associated Press poll and are close to earning an invitation next month to the four-team College Football Playoffs.

Wisconsin was 0-2 in Big Ten games in mid-October but has now won five consecutive league games. With an overall 9-2 record and 6-2 in the Big Ten, a win against Minnesota sends the Badgers to the conference title game next month in Indianapolis. A victory by the Badgers also would put the all-time series standings against Minnesota at 59-59-8.

But the Gophers, 8-3 and 5-3, would spoil Wisconsin’s CFP hopes with an upset, and that’s just part of how wild things could end in the West Division by Saturday night. Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, and Wisconsin could all finish with 6-3 records. The Badgers, though, would be invited to Indianapolis because they have wins over Iowa and Nebraska, and the Gophers lost to both the Hawkeyes and Cornhuskers.

Go Gophers!!

Disagree with the format. Plus, no one except the deplorable Becky fans want to see them in Indy.If you beat a higher ranked team in the National rankings that should override the " who beat who" scenario.JMO...

It would be an upset but Shama makes it sound like this is Russell-Tyler-Ruthton playing Eden Prairie.

The victory over them in 1993 was probably the most significant.
They would have likely been in the national champ discussion had they won that one.

No one Ruppert? I bet some of the barkeeps in Indy would be happy to see the Badgers back again. The people that care about TV ratings might be pretty happy with it too.

It would've still been FSU vs. Nebraska in the national title game. West Virginia and Notre Dame would've also been in line ahead of wisconsin.

Flushing their playoff hopes would be extra special, and it would mean any Gopher fans in Madison this weekend would have the pleasure of seeing grown men cry. I hate Bucky and this streak. It will be sweet when it ends.

Thought along Ruppert's line, but yes, it will be a big upset. Unranked beating ranked team is very rare. Saw a few games were both teams were ranked. Through that in also.

Unranked vs ranked upset

1993 Unranked MN beat #15 WI

1961 Unranked WI beats #3 MN

Both Teams ranked Games

2014 #14 WI beat #22MN

2013 #17 WI beating #23 MN

2005 #5 WI beat #22 MN

2003 #24 MN beat unranked WI*

1999 #20 WI beat #25 MN

Completely agree. Can't believe he thinks it is even close to that game. Shama is a tool and is just hedging so he can write something more stupid if the Gophs don't win.

Lucy is not going to pull the football away this time and I'm really going to kick it!

You are correct. Wisconsin was never going to win the NC in 1993, even if they had beaten the Gophers. Also, a victory over the Badgers this weekend would be way bigger at the time of the game than the victory over the Badgers in 1993. First, in 1993, the game was in the middle of the Big Ten season, not at the end, when we know much better how good a team is. And at the time of 1993 game, Wisconsin had beaten 5 absolute nobodies, and 1 ok-solid Indiana team. In 1993, Wisconsin was 3-0 at the time in conference, having beaten Indiana, Purdue and Northwestern, the latter 2 of which would both go 0-8 in the Big Ten that year. Wisconsin had also beaten Nevada, Iowa State and SMU in non-conference play, none of whom was any good at all. So Wisconsin was 6-0, ranked about 15 or 16, with nobody thinking they were somehow a national championship contender. This year, Wisconsin is ranked 10 spots higher, and losing this year could cost them a shot at the Big Ten Championship game and the playoff. Also, the game this year is at Madison, whereas the 1993 game was in Minneapolis, making any victory this year way bigger at the time of the game. It is not even close.

Hahaha! Post of the year. Of course it helps that I am an RTR alum...

If Minnesota wins, Minnesota may jump pretty close to them in the rankings. I personally think both teams would be in the 15-20 range.

Minnesota waiting on a quality win to rise quickly, Wisconsin all of a sudden doesn't look nearly as good with just two great losses. Especially if LSU loses too.

If Wisconsin, Iowa, and LSU both lose all of a sudden wisconsins second best win is against a 6 win LSU team or a 7 win Iowa team. That would drop them very far imo. Having two very quality lossses is only good on the resume if it is backed up by quality wins and no bad losses.

Wisconsin would fall down to about 12 or 13. Minnesota would (maybe) rise to 21 or 22.
