I guess the NCAA is okay with this? He's brought in players like Trent Richardson, Blake Sims and John Parker Wilson.

Nick Saban has been using former NFL players on his practice scout team to help prepare the Tide for their opponents.

While slick Saban has been doing this all season, most people just learned about it last weekend, when it was discussed during the telecast of the Alabama-LSU game.

While the idea initially sounds like something the NCAA would never allow, what Saban is doing is actually 100 percent permissible, thanks to NCAA bylaw 14.2.1.6:

"A former student at the certifying institution (e.g., former student-athlete) may participate in an organized practice session on an occasional basis, provided the institution does not publicize the participation of the former student at any time before the practice session."

I heard about this, and it's a pretty cool idea, until someone figures out how to abuse the privilege. Of course, being college football, someone will take it too far.

The gophers should do this. Like actually, this could greatly improve our team IMO.

Yeah, like Bud Grant can be the middle linebacker on the scout team and show our guys a thing or two ....

Well Laurence Maroney might be able to help with pursuit angles.... Ron Johnson could maybe help with receivers seeing that Decker is injured/ still in the NFL... Foggie help with QB's?

Or someone gets seriously hurt because they are trying to tackle a guy that is much stronger than them.

Not to mention, you create some relationships where former players can be mentors, having learned more and played more, and that can continue long distance.

Simple. Only allow current students to practice. Would have thought that to be the rule already.

This can absolutely be achieved without having to ever step foot on a football field.

I can imagine Spencer Pennington running scout team drills down in Tuscaloosa.....:)

Right, understandably it can, and should happen regardless. However, having a joint practice, or something as simple as an alum meet and greet helps facilitate this. Actual practice helps give more reason for alum to come back, but like you said, this could be achieved without. Someone just needs to take the initiative to invite alum to meet current players on and/or off the field.
