That's even if we don't win another game.

SOme of you people on here crying for changes don't realize how successful we are.

Any of us would have take this record 20+ years out of the 30 last years!!

Then we shouldn't have fired Mason. We'd have had a bunch more of these seasons and some here would be ecstatic.

Knowing your work from other boards you are in sarcasm mode this Sunday morning

Thanks. You have the skunks and hog-eyes laughing hysterically at this pathetic take.

Perhaps my sarcasm meter busted and I'm missing the point.

If we don't win another game it will be around our 9th best season out of the last 18. So that's pretty good. I don't know what you're counting. We now play 9 BT games and most so comparing BT seasons is a moot point. You need to compare total wins. We also will have lost, and not won back, or won any trophy games under Claeys. Your statement is ridiculous. Maybe next year we can beat some NSIC teams and then we'll have the best season ever.

Now I know what some posters mean when they say our fans accept mediocrity. A 7-5 season with this schedule after what Kill built is sh^t and these players and fans deserve for this AD to do everything he can to bring in a coach with better credentials and experience or this program will just continue to slide backward and time and recruiting classes will be wasted. Some of you aren't getting any younger. Go ahead and compare the enthusiasm for the program the last 3 or 4 years compared to now. I don't understand how some say that doesn't matter. It sure as the heck DOES matter to the person in charge of the Athletic Department. If he doesn't make a change this year he'll find out real fast next year. Teague did serious damage raising the ticket prices and Coyle's best hope is to dial that back and go on a serious marketing campaign and bring in a new coach to signify a new era. He also needs to market the new facilities hand in hand with a new coach and market the new ticket structure and game day experience.

7-0 against bad teams and 0-3 against good teams is not a successful season.

Ding Ding Ding Ding......

This team is firmly in the Mason year's right now. Teams have to take us seriously and we are a threat to pull the upset most weeks however we also just aren't quite good enough to ever actually get over the hump into legit contender status. Give Mason this schedule and I have zero doubt that we would be at worst 7-3 and possibly 8-2.

If that is ok for fans and administration then Claeys should get an extension because this is probably about where his ceiling is a coach and recruiter. We will be solid, not a bottom feeder but also not really a contender either. Good enough to compete with most teams each week but not good enough to really be a serious threat to win the division/BIG each year.

I believe Claeys said he expected a 9-10 win season and a shot at the B1G Ten Championship.
They're all still doable.

They still haven't played a bad game this year, should have beat Penn State, played tough with Iowa whose win over Michigan should give you an idea of how good they can be, losing to Nebraska after knocking at their doorstep to tie the game late. Even in the Mason years there weren't many years as good as this one.

Wow, talk about low expectations. Both teams played horrible in that Iowa game and I don't know how anyone could say we played a good game against Rutgers needing a last second field goal to beat a really bad team at home.

This season has been mediocre from top to bottom, we have yet to beat a good team and while it is nice to have been competitive with the three good teams we have played so far I guess I am being unrealistic to think we should expect to maybe find a way to win at least one of those games if not more.

7 wins will satisfy a portion of the fan base apparently, but some of us would actually like to see us beat a good team this year before going considering this season a successful one.

You know all this about Clayes and the new staff after one season? What lottery numbers should I play on a Tuesday?

Enough with the Claeys first season crap. He came with Kill and was hired into the head coach position to maintain continuity. He chose to make the coaching changes that occurred so if things aren't going smoothly that is on him. If he was an outside coach that had come into the program this year then folks would likely give him some slack. Claeys has been here all along and things should be going much better than they are.

So he is not a first year HC?

Have you seen a drastic shift in anything since Claeys took over from Kill? He fired a couple of coaches but beyond that it is basically just an extension of the Jerry Kill era. And yeah my feeling on Kill was his ceiling was in Mason territory and I feel the same for Claeys. I have seen nothing from Claeys that makes me think he is going to be able to outdo the head coach he worked for, for 17 years. Maybe I will be proven wrong but I just don't see it.

So he is not a first year HC?

Not in the same situation as 99% of true first year HC.

He has been at the U for about 5 years already.
He coached for many years with some of the same staff under him now.
As a result he knows the kids, knows the coaches, knows the routine, knows the conference etc.
He had nearly half a season as HC last year and several games before that.

You're frustrated. I get it. So am I. But saying Claeys isn't a first year head coach, especially with the staff moves he made, and could only make, prior to this year is just moronic. The reason why a head coach gets the big money and are constantly on the hot seat is because they have control over all the shots. That's what distinguishes them from a coordinator. Or, in the business world, a CEO from a VP. This is the first full year he's had that. Thus, first year head coach. Deal with it.

Not quite correct. I believe he said that the team should win 8 to 10 games. I don't know whether he was counting a bowl game in that total. He still has a realistic shot at finishing at the bottom of that range for the regular season.

You confuse me. Stop with the disclaimers. Either he is or he isn't.

Most his players are the same as Kill's last year so why are you surprised the team looks the similar? Was the magical change you were expecting realistic?

Remember: Jimmies & Joes over Xs & Os every time.

Yes he is, and it shows. He's losing all the ground Kill gained. He's lost every trophy game opportunity. Kill beat IA twice, NE twice, MI, PSU, and NW. It's called going backwards.

Did Kill win all those games in his first year?
Your argument is going backwards.

Give Claeys five years of recruiting his own guys for his own style of play and see how he does.

In the meantime, the guys never quit and Leidner is leading this team like no other.
Just keep your head up and keep marching forward.

If you told us we'd have 7 wins right now, we'd all take it versus 7 losses.

Claeys with 5 years of experiences probably keeps us playing in high low level bowl games for years to come.

Hats off to the team, the University, and to Coach Claeys who is bowl bound in his rookie season!

This is true. But some people are acting like this is his 5th season too and that just isn't the case. He made changes, it's not like this is Kill's program continued either. He should have a shorter leash than other first time head coaches, but he also shouldn't be treated like a guy that is in year 5 either.

So a winning record in your first year as HC isn't grounds for being fired? Sounds to me like you are accepting mediocrity.

And your blind faith in Claeys is moronic. Do you feel that this team is moving in the right direction under him? If so, why? I am dealing with it by not engaging with a poorly coached, poorly executing team, that continues to make mental mistakes. I feel that is what a lot of folks that have followed the team for years might be doing. We all should expect more from a head coach who took over a team he was totally familiar with. When the product on the field is not generating any excitement you have major issues in a market like this.
