The Golden Gophers will rally back from the Rutgers game to come up with a terrific game from the defense, especially against the run. Illinois will give up close to 300 rushing yards as Minnesota runs and runs and runs some more. Don’t expect anything flashy – Goldy will go ultra-conservative.

Final Score: Minnesota 30, Illinois 16

Man, I forgot about that website. They have a college football dynasty simulation game that used to be pretty fun. Then they were bought out, made a bunch of changes, and a lot of people left. It was really cool there for awhile.

Sorry, got a bit off topic there

Final Analysis

Despite the difference in records, this game has to potential to be a good one. Each team needs the win for different reasons, and it should be a back-and-forth affair all afternoon. In the end, the difference will be the Minnesota skill players. They simply create too many mismatches for the Illini to overcome. One of those mismatches is likely going to lead to a big play that ends up being the game-winner. Things are going to get better in Champaign for Lovie Smith and Co., but it'll be one more notch in the loss column for the Illini on this day.

Prediction: Minnesota 24, Illinois 20

News Gazette chimes in:

Prediction: Minnesota 28, Illinois 17

Minnesota was one of those 5-7 teams that snuck into a bowl game last season, while Illinois was not. If the Illini had won last season in Minneapolis, the offseason talk could have focused on the program’s second consecutive bowl trip. Perhaps it might have been enough for Bill Cubit to keep his job, too. Since the two teams met last November, both programs have gone in different directions. Minnesota is 6-3 since, winning the Quick Lane Bowl to snap a seven-game bowl losing streak. Meanwhile, Illinois is 2-6 since its 2015 loss to the Gophers and well on its way to its fifth consecutive losing season. Illinois surprised Minnesota in its last trip to Champaign in 2014, pulling off a 28-24 win thanks to a late forced fumble by T.J. Neal and recovery for a touchdown by V’Angelo Bentley. The victory helped spur the Illini to their only bowl appearance during the Tim Beckman era. But Lovie Smith’s team has had difficulty containing the run throughout this season. Illinois keeps it close, but the Gophers’ ability to move the ball on the ground is too much.
