Use Wisconsin's Model

As long as we're throwing out crackpot scenarios: I don't think Barry and Bielema left on good terms. You pay Bielema more money and sell him on sticking it to Barry every year.

I am told that Barry and Bret now talk regularly. Not sure if it's true, but the level of animosity has declined.

The biggest factor in Wisconsin's resurgence was Donna Shalala, who hired Pat Richter, who hired Barry Alvarez. Until Minnesota has the university establishment supporting the athletic department, it ain't gonna happen. I wish it would, since a strong football team at both schools is good for the B1G.

Mason did more with less. One of the Wisconsin losses was due to the dropped punt and subsequent block on the kicker Kusek. The year Glen won 10 games he received a incentive bonus. He divided it up and gave it to his assistant coaches because he felt they were under paid. His working relationship with Maturi was cold as ice. Go ahead and bash Mason, but I will go to my death bed knowing he would have been a winner in TCF Stadium. Now what do we have? A fu-king Michelin tire coaching on the sidelines with a MAC mentality and staff.

Totally agree with ruppert.

Mason's a bit older, but he's not decrepit. If K-State can rehire Bill Snyder, we can ask Mase to come back. He would do it in a heartbeat and already lives in the Cities and loves Minnesota athletics.

We also need to improve the party/game day scene in Como. That's mostly what I think about when I compare the UW game day experience. We need to turn Como into a game day center as it's one of the only places on campus that has that college feel to it.

How did BrewCrew+Kill+Claeys do against Wisconsin? I'll take Glen and his win over every team in the Big Ten any day over what we've had since.

That said, I'd prefer better. There is a reason Glen was eventually fired. We dared to want more, but ended up with less.

Do you think any of us think what has happened subsequently is better than what Mason provided? We're not satisfied. I just don't get you blind Mason-boosters. He had reached his pinnacle. It doesn't matter what we've done since he left, the fact that he had a .400 Big Ten winning percentage is proof enough that he had to go. His teams laid so many eggs that I think the poultry producers were going to become the prime sponsor of the broadcasts.

If Brooks is healthy this season, it is likely that he and Rodney Smith would both go over 1,000 yards. So all this "I wish we had Gordy Shaw's line and all would be hunky-dory" is a pile. Mason didn't recruit well and no one since Mason has recruited well. Maybe the Athletic Village and an AD with a focus can turn that around, but bringing back the Mason mentality is just another nod to mediocrity.

What difference would TCF have made?

He worked very hard at Capitol Hill to get the bill approved. I honestly believe he would've been revitalized. Woody would have left him alone to run the the football program versus the bean counter Maturi. Yeah. We lost some heartbreaking games under Mason, but I always enjoyed watching his team's play. I can't say the same for Kill/Claeys régime. Mason had a personality
and a sense of humor. When Kill lost a game it was a pitty party. I would take Mason back in a heartbeat.

They were still 9-3 and defeated a highly ranked Purdue team.

No, they didn't. We didn't play Purdue or OSU that year, who were both quite good. PSU was down and Wisconsin was mediocre, those were the best wins of the regular season. Though obviously it was still a better season than any of us can remember.

Mason via TV and radio has done a hell of a job rebranding himself. At this rate, his legacy might eventually catch up to his massive ego.

Stop typing "we".

Go to your own board.

I'd take those years back in a heartbeat! His 2003 Sun Bowl team that got screwed out of a better bowl would have crushed Kill's Citrus Bowl team. Mason made me feel we could beat anyone. He beat every Big 10 team. He won at Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan and Michigan State. I am amazed at how people still rip him when we haven't come close to replicating his success. Gopher football had not been in a bowl game in about 13 years when he got us there.

Agree on Mason 1999 team that went 8-4 (5-3 Big Ten) and 2003 team that went 10-3 (5-3 Big Ten). Last three Mason season 7-5 (3-5), 7-5 (4-4), and 6-7 (3-5). Mason had more then enough frustrating games that many were happy to see him go and not return. Plus remember Mason had a powderpuff schedule in non-conference games to almost gurantee a 4-0 start. So we haven't come close to replicating his 10-win season. That is about it.

Aranda was smart enough to have his salary guaranteed for the duration of his contract no matter what happened to Miles.
I doubt if the U could beat the contract he has at LSU.
My opinion is that Mason's teams on offense were better prepared and had more talent than the teams have had after he left.
Defense was his Achille's heel.

Wtf is this nonsense, Becky troll? Claeys already earns more than Aranda, idiot. Not to mention the fact that the previous head coach was being paid almost twice Aranda's current salary less than one year ago.

I was not only referring to the amount of the $ which is quite high for a DC but the absolute guarantee of payment and the fact that as a HC at MN he would be an upgrade and he would expect to be paid a lot more than his predecessors who failed.

I don't know that we follow Wis. on everything but I will take player discipline. Wisconsin had - think about this -0 penalties yesterday at Iowa. Yes, 0 penalties.

I have no interest in being like Wisconsin. They were 33.5 point favorites against a then winless Georgia State team and needed a 4th quarter rally to win by 6. For shame!

Never mind the win against LSU and Iowa.

He was joking about how people here got so upset about the Gophers under-performing against Rutgers, even though they got the win.

Yo, Mr. Know it All. Aranda earns over 1.3 million.

Tough break. I never wish kids ill & hope he recovers. But, just another reason why we just need to play the season out....

Ok. So Aranda is going to come here for .3 million more? I doubt it.

What do we honestly think the U will pay for a head coach?

Who said that? As I've stated repeatedly, we paid our head coach $2.5 million less than one year ago.

So we are looking at spending about 4 million a year? I thought Kill made 2.1M in his last year?
