Official 2019 Recruiting Updates Thread: Links, Tweets, Videos, Stories, Rumors, etc.

Haha yeah was pretty obvious he was going to commit this weekend

Says a guy named "MinnesotaNice".

Anyway, we already have Potts as a slot receiver. I'd rather see another tall receiver like Johnson.

They got Nnamdi. Bateman, Gibson, and VanDyne are all listed at 6'2" or more. I don't think we know at this point that Potts will end up primarily as a slot wr. We need a productive slot guy, I think this kid can fill that role perfectly.

He does a lot of after-TD showboating and he runs East/West a lot, but he has some good cut moves. Looks like a slot receiver at best.

What film were you watching? Pretty standard TD celebrating from what I saw.

I'm not feeling nearly as good about this class as I was a month ago. Here is how I would rank the position groups as they stand today:

QB - B/B+ Adding 2 QBs I think is the right move as we didn't get a prep scholarship QB last class. Clark seems like a nice get, but Duggan or Bachmeier were needed to get an A.
RB - D - I have no idea what we are doing at RB in this class. What position is Potts? What position is Wiley? 2 recruits that haven't played football since they were sophs. We lost Brock to Iowa St of all places. We had 3 high quality backs in for OVs (Doerue, Barlow and Brock) but couldn't seal the deal with any of them.
WR - A- Nnamdi looks like a big time playmaker. The final grade will be based on who else we add.
OL - D Guedet appears to be a very good o-line recruit, but I'm a believer that you should add at least 3 O-linemen in each class. We had 2 4-stars in-state and it appears we will miss on both. Fleck needs to pull a surprise here.
DL - A Bargy and Harris are maybe the 2 best prep DEs that we have ever added. Lots of DTs, including some promising JUCOs. There is a lot to like with this d-line class.
LB - B- Willis and Gordon both appear to be solid but not spectacular
CB - A- Nubin and Brown are a really nice tandem at corner. Both are physical and fast.
S - C Not really sure what to think about Robinson with his limited footage.

I'd probably give the class a B- at this stage. I see the need to still add a playmaker at RB, a WR, 2 o-linemen, possibly a DT and a safety. That's 5-6 additional spots, and I think we have 2-3 remaining. Another reason I really don't like giving scholarships to specialists...

Bumping my own thread...

Still don’t like where we are at with o-line, RB or safety.

Grant Tieber, the 6-6 280-lb OT from Sioux Falls SD committed to Iowa State over finalists Minnesota, Nebraska, and Oregon. Oh well. At least it is not to Iowa or to Nebraska.

Of all the remaining uncommitted top OL recruits, it doesn't appear their crystal balls are trending strongly to MN. https://247sports.com/college/minnesota/Season/2019-Football/Recruits/?Player.Enabled=True&Position.Key=po_17,po_16,po_18&Recruitment.Enabled=True&RecruitInterests.Institution.Key=in_24044&RecruitInterests.Institution.Teams.CurrentConference=cf_4

Are there any OLs from MN other than Carroll and Benhart that the Gophers are watching or are interested in? I am thinking maybe there will be some late bloomers?

It is disappointing to see Carroll (ND) and Benhart (Wisc, Neb, Mich, Tenn, MN) go elsewhere.

I'll disagree with you on RB. I like the young RBs already on the roster, and I think Wiley has a good chance of really blowing up this year. I would like to see another OL and S. But they have also taken 11 OL in the last two classes. So even if they only end up taking 1 OL this year, that's 12 in 3 classes for Fleck, an average of 4 per year.

Perhaps he wants to be the man on campus. Give us a year or two and you can be the man in the whole state.

Iowa State on the up and up. They had a good season last year and are recruiting well because if it. It sucks, but they're probably a year or two ahead of us. Need to show some progress in the W/L column

They may move someone to guard, but Wisconsin has a five star, and a high three star committed at OT, they're also in on some other four star It as well. I guess the point I'm making is if Benhart to Madison was such a done deal it would've happened by now. We have taken one Ot so far, may not be the favorite but it doesn't seem like such a for gone conclusion that it's over. We have Now in this year, Iam assuming they're friends

It's not all sucky ducky. If they become better than Iowa, I love to see Iowa lose every year against Iowa Sate in their rivalry game.

I meant it sucks that they're a little better right now and are beating us for some of our top targets as a result.

That may be the difference of PJ Fleck going 5-7 and Matt Campbell going 8-5 last season.

Being blown out on the last two games last season doesn't help recruiting. PJ rightfully did not sacrifice red shirts.

The Gophers lost three games last season by a TD or less. Had the Gopher been 7-5 or 6-6 for that matter won a game or two over Iowa (loss 17-10), MSU (lost 30-27), and Maryland (lost 31-24), I wonder how much that impacts recruiting which means they would've gone to a bowl game getting added exposure.

Yet our recruiting class is nearly identical to theirs so it must not matter that much.

It just stinks that they are getting recruits away from us.

Iowa St also beat Oklahoma last year. Career win for Campbell. And he’s a young, former MAC coach like Fleck.

Really like their program, and hoping that’s what Minn will get.

I agree with SON on the importance of the offensive line to mount any type of offensive production. I am still worried if guys like Jared Weyler go down, the O Line depth and experience level can quickly change the complexion of the game.

Callahan has a very tall order the next three years. He has to have linemen getting drafted. If he is as good as his time WMU in molding B1G linemen, then we are in good shape. Before we anoint him, let's see how the O-Line does next season.

Hopefully Weyler and Greene get noticed by the NFL to give good publicity to the Gophers. Winning brings good things to a program.

Go Gophers!!

One name the Gophers could possibly be looking at is Hunter Poncius from Buffalo who is currently an NDSU OT commit. He’s listed at 6’7 & 255 lbs on 247 sports so he’s got the chance to grow into a Big 10 OT.

It's great that Iowa State is improving -- I want them to to be the best team in Iowa. That way instead of Iowa getting the instate recruits, they'll go to Iowa State. What's good news for Iowa State is bad news for Iowa which is good news for us.

Unless it's a player not from Iowa that we wanted, but you're correct, anything to hurt Iowa

QUINCY -- Jirehl Brock recalled sitting down to one of the best meals he's ever eaten during his official recruiting visit to Northwestern earlier this summer.

"They took me to this really nice steak place, and I had a steak that was worth about $80," he said while speaking to members of the Quincy Exchange Club during a Friday luncheon at the Elks. "I'm like, ‘I'm glad I didn't have to pay for that.'"

The Quincy High School football standout also talked about being taken to a "huge roller coaster park" during his trip to the University of Minnesota.

"And we also went on a boat cruise on Lake Minnetonka," he said. "That was really cool. I'd never done that before."

His visit to Iowa State was a bit simpler. He played paintball for the first time.

"That hurts," he said. "I'll do it again, but I'm wearing more padding."

In the end, however, Brock admitted that when it came time to choose where he will attend college, the relationships he had made with the players and coaching staff at Iowa State made the difference.

"They didn't try to blow me up with flashy stuff," he said. "I'm not going to lie. The flashy stuff is really cool, but the relationships are a big part. Even after I signed, I'm talking with (head coach Matt) Campbell and (running backs coach Nathan) Scheelhaase at least once every two days.

"(QHS coach Rick) Little gave me a paper with a list of 10 things to look at in making my decision, and gut feeling was the last one. It really wasn't my gut. It was really my heart."

Brock covered several topics during his 20-minute talk to the club, but most of it centered on the recruiting process. He said he received his first scholarship offer on May 7, 2017, from Iowa. He received an offer from Michigan State three weeks later, and the week after that, one came from Iowa State.

"I was 16 years old at the time, and it was very overwhelming," he said.

In all, he received 14 offers.

Brock made six unofficial visits to Iowa, but he canceled his official visit to Iowa City in June. The Hawkeyes ended up signing Tyler Goodson from Georgia and Mekhi Sargent, a transfer from Iowa Western with three years of eligibility remaining.

"I was talking to (Iowa tight ends coach LeVar) Woods, who is the recruiting coordinator for this area. He told me they really wanted me, but they had to take the commitment from the kid from Georgia," Brock said. "He said he didn't know they were taking a junior college back. I think the new running backs coach (Derrick Foster) was more high on the guy from Georgia, and I was kind of Coach Woods' guy.

"They still wanted me to come there, but they didn't want me to be in the same position."

Little said an offer received from the University of Notre Dame on the Tuesday before Father's Day "changed the game" with Iowa.

"Jirehl waited a while and said he wanted to go through the whole process, and he was very up front about that," Little said. "Some schools thought he was waiting for an offer from the big three in the Midwest -- Ohio State, Michigan or Notre Dame.

"When he got the Notre Dame (offer), what was happening was they were trying to get another guy to move. It was like, ‘This guy won't make a decision, so now we're going to offer Jirehl Brock.' And Iowa was like, ‘We've got to go now.'"

Brock and Little both talked about some of the recruiting tactics they encountered.

"This process has been really crazy," Little said. "You see the strategy that goes into every different school. Even at the end of June, I had different schools calling me, like six times in one day. ‘Any update? Have you talked to him?' They knew his decision was coming, and sometimes I could feel the pressure that recruiter was under."

Brock recounted high-pressure recruiting he received from Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck.

"When Coach Little says people were calling every hour, it was (Minnesota) calling," he said. "They would text every 30 minutes. It was a lot to take in. You don't want to be rude about it. You try to be as nice as possible. They were the hardest school to say no to.

"Before I took my visit, I heard they would put you in the office and lock the doors and put an hourglass upside down and say, ‘You have this much time to commit.' Good thing they never did that to me. Talking to Coach Fleck in his office with my parents, it was really tempting to commit because of the approach he takes. He's a really good guy, don't get me wrong, but he knows how to make somebody intimidated."

Brock said some schools he encountered were "arrogant" in their approach.

"There's a lot of schools who will offer and not continue communication, and yet they still want you to go there," he said. "They expect you to pick their school based on their history.

"The whole recruiting process comes down to relationships. If you don't have one, you're not going to go there."

Brock says he plans to play basketball again for QHS. He has no plans to graduate in December so he can begin working out and attending classes at Iowa State, but he's already talking regularly with other Iowa State recruits.

"We just talk about all kinds of stuff, like Paul George's overall (rating) in NBA 2K," he said. "I'll have the whole next summer to go up there and get ready."

Nonetheless, the recruiting pitches haven't stopped. The phone calls have slowed, but Brock continues to receive several pieces of mail each week.

"I don't even think I've told Coach Little this," Brock said as he turned to Little. "The University of Virginia (recently) offered me. Sorry I didn't tell you that.

"It didn't really matter, because I'm really comfortable in my decision to go to Iowa State. I know some schools will try to get me to change my mind, but it probably won't happen."

Interesting Read on Flecks recruiting tactics. Granted it seems mostly hear say because Fleck didn’t do it to Brock.

We know Fleck is a highly involved recruiter. One could see that in the Being PJ Fleck series.

I officially don't like Fleck now. High enthusiasm is one thing, but this behavior and his need to brand everything at the U with his stupid oars is psychotic and selfish. He is exactly the opposite of "Minnesota Nice." I hope his replacement is more similar to Kill. Fleck is Brewster 2.0.

I heard... but it never happened to me. Do you think maybe, just maybe, that was said to him by a fellow coach, like maybe the ones at Iowa State? I mean jeepers make a decision for yourself not based one hearsay that’s 3rd hand at best

Or even Iowa?! He visited Iowa 6x and then had a falling out. I’m sure our neighbors to the south weren’t saying nothing but compliments about Fleck & Co. Also, could have been Illinois coaches as well as there seems to be tension towards Fleck from IL.
