All Things 2016 Coaching Firing/Hiring Thread

CBS: UConn fires coach Bob Diaco the day after Christmas following a 3-9 season

Connecticut has fired coach Bob Diaco.

The school made the surprising announcement on Monday morning, well after every other coaching vacancy had already been filled.

"I believe a new leader for our program and student-athletes is needed to build long-term success," athletic director Dave Benedict said in a statement. "I am grateful to Coach Diaco and his staff for their hard work and the integrity with which they ran the program and certainly wish them future success. ...

"I know this may come as a surprise to our fans and supporters given the timing of this decision. However, it became apparent to me that a change in program direction is necessary at this time."

per CBS:

Here are five names to watch to take over the Huskies, in alphabetical order ...

Andrew Breiner, Fordham coach: This list is heavy with connections to the program. Breiner was a graduate assistant under Randy Edsall when the Huskies won the 2010 Big East title. He was picked to take over Fordham a year ago when Joe Moorhead went to Penn State. The Fordham website refers to Breiner as "stylish." Don't know about that, but UConn would be getting a 32-year-old offensive mind with one year of head coaching experience. The Rams' Chase Edmonds is currently leading FCS with 1,799 rushing yards.

Randy Edsall, Detroit Lions director of football research: Would Edsall be interested? Would UConn take him back? Edsall left the Huskies after 12 seasons rather unceremoniously to take the Maryland job in 2011. The UConn players were basically left hanging as Edsall departed without telling the team. Neither he, nor UConn, have been the same since. Edsall lasted 5½ seasons at Maryland after winning the Big East with the Huskies in 2010. UConn would be quite a bounce-back job. After being fired at Maryland, Edsall hasn't been on the field as even an assistant in 1½ seasons. Fun fact: Edsall was hired at UConn by current Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel, who inherited Jim Harbaugh.

Les Miles, former LSU coach: Since Les hasn't said no, we can only assume he is interested. It looked like Miles had been shut out of the latest round of coaching changes. UConn could do a lot worse. We'll say it again, but Miles has told insiders he would switch to the spread if need be. UConn barely missed out on the Power Five in the last round of realignment. Miles is the No. 1 name on this list if we're talking about the guy to make the Huskies relevant again.

Joe Moorhead, Penn State offensive coordinator: Moorhead had such a fantastic year in his first season as Penn State's OC that he might want to pass on this one. There are probably better jobs in his future. Moorhead was quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator for a time from 2009-11 at UConn. He already has four years of head coaching experience, taking Fordham to the playoffs three times in four seasons. A lot of folks thought he should have been a finalist for the Broyles Award (best assistant coach).

Todd Orlando, Texas defensive coordinator: Orlando's head already has to be spinning. His star ascended during two seasons as Tom Herman's DC at Houston. When Herman left for Texas earlier this month, Orlando was named Houston's interim coach. However, offensive coordinator Major Applewhite got the permanent job. Orlando had a job waiting for him at Texas, where he is just getting acquainted. He spent 11 years at UConn coaching linebackers and eventually becoming defensive coordinator (2005-10) for Edsall.

Possible les miles/tom osborn meeting would be interesting.

And we thought we were late.

My guess is they're gunning hard for Kelly or Miles. Kelly is already in the area but I don't know they have the money to pay him

Dykes firing this late would seem to indicate Cal already has someone lined up.

Good hire by UConn.

I wonder if Wisconsin would consider Claeys or Sawvel for DC.

This will be the downfall of WI. They are on their way down now.
