GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The words had barely escaped Peter Mortell’s lips -- “I believe I’m an NFL punter” -- when the Green Bay Packers rookie’s point was proven for him, albeit in an unexpected way.

Following the Packers’ preseason victory over Oakland at Lambeau Field last Thursday night, Mortell found himself in a swirl of lights, cameras and questions as he stood at his locker. After another impressive performance -- he averaged 57.0 gross yards, 58.0 net yards and 4.52 seconds of hang time on his two punts -- reporters weren’t so interested in his heartwarming local-boy-makes-good story as they were in the fact that he’s turned the Packers’ punting battle into a genuine competition with incumbent Tim Masthay.

I hope he wins. I also hope Marcus Sherels returns one of his punts for a TD on September 18th.

Sounds like he's really performing when the lights come on. Good for him. Somebody posted a practice report the other day that had Masthay crushing him in hang time and distance. Interesting to follow...

I gotta think most of us thought this guy was more than "good story" he did a good job for us. I assumed someone in the NFL would give him a job.

If they are within a few yards of each other, it goes to Pete. Mathsay $1.3M. Only $100K guaranteed. Mortell $450K. None guaranteed.

Plus he's a Green Bay native.

It appears Peter lost his attempt to make the Packers. Too bad.

I'm proud to say I made that dream a reality. I can't thank my family, friends, and fans enough for their support throughout my time here. YOU are what makes this team so special. Well that kind of stinks. He was looking good in the games so maybe he can still land some place this year.

He'll be on a lot of lists when teams decide they need to consider changing punters. I predict he'll get two or three more chances this year.

Maybe the Vikings could cut Locke and sign Mortell

I just saw one of his punts the other night and it had about 2.5 second hang time, was not that long, and was returned for about 15-20 yards I think. After that I wondered if his days in Green and Gold were over.

If he gets cut, Vikings need to pick him up and move Locke.

Jeff Locke is a liability and we can merge Pete into viking fanmanship :)

That's always been his problem though. Out of every 10 punts, 7 are beautiful, and 3 leave you scratching your head.

Exactly, really great kid but he lacks consistency. Some of his line drive punts will results in big returns in the NFL.
