2016 NFL Training Camp Notes

per STrib:

Lost in #BridgewaterGate was the game-winning, overtime-avoiding play made by veteran cornerback Marcus Sherels, the former Gopher.

After the Seahawks rallied to tie the score and kicker Blair Walsh missed a 47-yard field goal, Sherels stepped in front of a pass from Seahawks rookie QB Trevone Boykin and took the pick all the way to the house.

“He threw it right to me, I intercepted it and scored a touchdown,” he said.

For Sherels, it was a temporary reprieve from the personal issues he is dealing with off the field. His brother, Mike, a coach for the Gophers, has been through multiple surgeries this month and as of a few days ago remained hospitalized because of an undisclosed medical condition.

As a result, Sherels did not travel to Cincinnati last week for the joint practices with the Bengals and the preseason opener. He was back with the team last weekend when they resumed practicing at Winter Park.

“It’s fun coming out and competing with my teammates and being with the team again,” he said. “The support has been great. Everyone’s been good to me. It was fun being out here and coming away with a win.”

Coach Mike Zimmer, who was not in a talkative mode when it came to his starting quarterback not starting, gushed about Sherels’ importance.

“Marcus did a nice job. He’s a kid that does an awful lot of stuff. He missed last week because he was dealing with some personal issues but came back and was a punt returner, a gunner, a nickelback, he’s a corner. He does a lot of things for us and does a nice job,” he said. “So it was nice to see him being rewarded tonight and he made a nice play and got a score.”

WR K.J. Maye – The Giant

Heart of a Champion
Despite this roster being stacked with receivers, Maye will continue to fight. During 2015 in Minnesota, the wide-out racked up 73 catches, 773 yards, and 5 touchdowns. Although he went undrafted, he was in continuous communication with the Giants and decided that they were the best fit.

Maye may be small in stature, but his strength is way beyond what his size might show. Many have said his route to the NFL would be impossible, but K.J. has always been one to defy the odds. With Maye, size does not matter; his physicality allows him to play both inside and out. His quick footwork, competitive nature, and heart are all the qualities a receiver should have and Maye, without a doubt, has them all.

The Transition
K.J. Maye was a quarterback at Murphy High School in Mobile, AL. This is where Maye learned and studied every aspect of the game. His hard work and Murphy “Panther-Pride” earned him a spot on the Minnesota Golden Gopher squad. Surprisingly, Maye had never played receiver until his time in college. Regardless, he quickly became to go-to WR and developed an NFL worthy skillset.

“I’m still learning at wide receiver and I have a lot of potential at that. I just feel like I take pride in that, whoever you line up against, short or tall, you still have to play ball.” – KJ Maye during Giants training camp

With the build for special teams, and a definite ability both in the slot and on the outside, Maye deserves to make the cut. This kid is no practice squad player, he will see the NFL primetime sooner rather than later.

Gopher Football: Gophers in the NFL--Preseason Update Edition

http://www.thedailygopher.com/2016/...a-gophers-in-the-nfl-preseason-update-edition

This season there are 18 former Gophers in NFL training camps as the NFL preseason games begin Thursday night. Lets take a look at all of them after a week and a half pf preseason action and their updated chances of making the final 53-man rosters.

We start with the 2016 NFL Rookies:
Eric Murray-DB Kansas City Chiefs

Murray did not get much defensive action in the Chiefs opener, but made a great special teams tackle. Murray may not see the field a lot on defense early in the year, but could be a special teams stud for KC.

De'Vondre, Ra'Shede and MarQueis all got talked about/mentioned last night on NBC. Was fun to see.

From what I can find, only 2 ex-Gophers were cut yesterday.

<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

15 still remain in NFL camps: Maxx Williams-Ravens, Damien Wilson-Cowboys, Isaac Fruechte-Vikings, Eric Murray-Chiefs, Briean Boddy Calhoun-Jags, MarQueis Gray-Dolphins, David Cobb-Titans, Marcus Sherels-Vikings, KJ Maye-Giants, Brock Vereen-Chiefs, Troy Stoudemire-Vikings, Eric Decker-Jets, Ra'Shede Hageman-Falcons, De'Vondre Campbell-Falcons, Tramaine Brock-49ers.

those were the only two cut yesterday. My list is the same as yours except Tramaine Brock. I don't have him listed because he transferred for his senior year.

Cobb will get a chance somewhere. RB position too crowded in TN right now.

Cobb getting cut may actually be a blessing in disguise, he never was going to sniff the field this year with Tennessee.

Maybe. Tennessee was a really good situation for him last year, then they spent a high draft pick on Henry and signed Murray. Obviously they didn't think highly of Cobb.

Cobbs running back coach with the Titans didn't believe in him. A change in teams is the only way Cobb will get a fair shot.

Or possibly, our guy Cobb doesn't have top end NFL talent. We'll see if he catches on anywhere. That said, I loved him here...

I think the injury bug held back Cobb last year, then when they re-stocked the position over the offseason the writing was on the wall. I think he'll get a shot somewhere else. I suspect that Stoudemire heads back to Canada. That may be a good landing spot for KJ Maye too.

Brock Vereen cut by Chiefs. Briean Boddy-Calhoun cut by Jags.

I believe that leaves: Maxx Williams-Ravens, Damien Wilson-Cowboys, Eric Murray-Chiefs, Marcus Sherels-Vikings, MarQueis Gray-Dolphins, Eric Decker-Jets, Ra'Shede Hageman-Falcons, De'Vondre Campbell-Falcons, Tramaine Brock-49ers

Remember when folks on here thought BBC was better than EM31? That was cute.

And remember when Donovahn Jones was the most impressive athlete on the team and a star in waiting.
Remember when Nugget was RB1 for 2015.
Remember when Eric Murray was a first rounder.
Remember when Damien Wilsonand Devonder Campbell were fringe NFL players

If anyone on here can peg players more than 50% of the time they ought to be on football staff.

I think I'd take David Cobb over C.J. Ham if I'm the Vikings.
