Sid: U does Smith wrong

Dr. Smith is an orthopedic specialist. I doubt it had to do with the wrestling team. Maybe the just wanted a better doc.

You know the old joke: "What do you call a guy that finishes last in his medical class? Doctor."

Seriously 3 pages on a doctor being let go? People lose their jobs all the time...I can't believe he was quoted in a story in the sports section. Maybe he was an as*hole that didn't get along with his colleagues - who knows? More importantly, who cares? He's worked for the U for 30 years - he's made a nice living...time to retire and let the next generation get some of the jobs - move over.

+1

Wrestling Scandal: Kaler needs a fall guy? Can't fire Robinson. So fire the Doc?

Beats me. People get fired all the time. Hiring the Viking's physician sounds like an upgrade. I know Alabama shares their Surgeon with the Washington Redskins. Dr. James Andrews. You may have heard of him.

Good points. Only question is the boldened part. You talking about Sid or Smith? If Sid, your timeline is a little short...

Why would Kaler have any interest in personally deciding who the Goph sport physician is, especially if the coaches were happy with him? Obviously, he would care less unless he had reasons to be concerned which would only happen if someone brought information to him. If he actually did fire Smith it is because he felt he had no choice. It does not mean he was right. It does not mean Smith did anything wrong. It might mean they felt he did not do something right when he had a chance and that is only a guess.
Its great to be a Minnesota fan, bitch about all of the problems and then bitch when they fire people without knowing the facts.

Spot on. For Pete's sake, the guy has better things to do than randomly fire underlings. It's easy to say "they never told me why" when legally the U can't divulge the real reason. This had to be something pretty major - he was the supplier of the prescription drugs, he made an inappropriate advance on a player, or some other scandal. Kaler likes the smell of his own farts too much to leave his office and fire someone he's probably never met and may have never heard of unless he absolutely had to.

A good chunk this thread is about farts.

per Sid:

Smith’s transition

In my column last Friday, I quoted Pat Smith saying he was removed of his duties as the Gophers football team’s doctor after 31 years by University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler, but that was ultimately not accurate.

Brad Nelson, an associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Minnesota, wrote in an e-mail that the University of Minnesota Physicians (UMP), a multi-specialty group practice within the medical school, have served as team doctors for all Gophers sports teams for several years except for the football and wrestling teams.

The UMP will now oversee the football team. Smith had a chance to oversee the transition for a year and work with the new doctor, Joel Boyd, but declined. Nelson said the decision to get rid of Smith was his, though Kaler supports it.

Nelson said Smith wasn’t let go because of anything he did wrong but rather because of the planned transition.

To me, it still makes no sense, because Smith will still be the physician for the wrestling team, although that arrangement, according to Nelson, is being discussed.

Having watched Smith serve Gophers teams for 31 years, I think he will be tough — maybe impossible — to replace.

Fire Kaler!

"...tough -- maybe impossible -- to replace."

This is why you can't trust anything Sid says. Not today, not tomorrow, not even 40 years ago. That is about the dumbest thing he has ever written. If you're not one of Sid's cronies you can't possible be any good.

For a couple decades now Sid is just, amusing. If you take it all with a grain of salt (or a box), it's actually a lot more fun than say the shock jock / twitter whore make nasty **** up / hot take stuff you get everywhere else.

Intentional or not. I really like the kinda random old man stuff.

Interesting. Especially since Smith reportedly told Sid he had no idea why he was let go in the original column. Either Sid never actually spoke to Smith for that quote or else things don't add up here.

Not that different from when Sid announced that the fund raising for the new facility was nearly done... and he had actually talked to Lou, and Lou hadn't said anything like that.

I have this image of the powers-that-be at the Strib and 'CCO just cringing every time Sid writes something off-the-wall, or says something wacky on the Sports Huddle.

They're in a real catch-22. They don't want to fire a legend, but Sid will never retire, so as long as he's breathing and still able to talk, (or croak), they're going to have to deal with him.

i'm confused did Sid admit his initial column was wrong and he printed like one of his farts in the wind and then retracted it and said it was someone else's brand. Some how a story about change in the U medical department ended up being about Sid liking his own farts.

It doesn't hurt the trib at all. Hell they can't be accurate / don't care to be outside of sid ...

Sid continues his coverage of Pat Smith-gate:

• Mark Griffen, an assistant coach at Eden Prairie, had these words to say about former Gophers team physician Pat Smith, saying the university is losing more than a great doctor. “He helped out my daughter when she tore her ACL a few years back, and the way he was concerned not only for the knee but her mental state in the recovery process,” he said. “You felt like he gave you 100 percent at every turn and really wanted to know how she was doing. Sad to see this happen to such a great guy.”

Well, If both Sid & Mark Griffen think he is a good guy then clearly the U is wrong. WTF? Why would anyone other than Mrs. Mark Griffen give a flying F what Mark Griffen thinks about the Dr.'s care of his daughter. This is a joke, right?

Man the U is really dropping the ball if they're not retaining people who impress the assistant coach at Eden Prairie....
