Minnesota top newcomer: LB Carter Coughlin

Minnesota has larger needs to address than the linebacker position this fall, but local standout Carter Coughlin could be too dynamic of a defender to keep off the field for a full season when he gets settled with the Gophers.

Getting Coughlin, the top-ranked player at any position from the state of Minnesota, to stick close to where he grew up was a major recruiting victory for new head coach Tracy Claeys amid a tumultuous year for the team and on the recruiting trail. Coughlin chose the Gophers over Oregon and Ohio State, surprising even his own family full of former Gopher athletes with the decision to play close to home.

His sideline-to-sideline speed and college-sized frame (6-foot-4, 215 pounds) give him the mold of a playmaker that could help Minnesota upgrade at an already deep position.

Claeys recently told reporters in Minnesota that he thinks he’ll have a feel for how much freshmen like Coughlin might be able to contribute during the 2016 season by the time the team wraps up its first few weeks of practice in August.

"In the college game, obviously they're going to play against some older kids and they're not going to be the best ones on the field all the time," he said. "How they adjust to that will be important, but the most important thing as coaches is in the first 15 to 18 practices, we need to identify those young kids who we feel like are ready to help us out."

Coughlin was among the three most-celebrated recruits to sign with the Gophers in February. Junior college transfers Vince Calhoun and Garrison Wright are both likely starters on a depleted offensive line this fall. Calhoun and Garrison are more likely to provide a boost in an area that needs help, but they arrived in time to get their feet wet in spring practice.
