Tracy Claeys was not available for today’s Sports Huddle. Filling in during his absence was the Directory of Recruiting Operations, Billy Glasscock. No names were given because of NCAA regulations, however, he did share some tidbits about this year's recruiting during his brief appearance.

1) Sid opened the questioning asking what the coaches are doing at this time recruiting-wise:

Spring recruiting is all about evaluation, according to Glasscock. From April 15 to May 31 the coaches are on the road seeking background and in-depth information about potential recruits and the players that they’re presently recruiting. He said they spent the winter looking at films of the potential recruits, however, there’s nothing like on-site evaluations – "making sure the kid is as big and fast as he says he is." They also try to ascertain their character, are they the right fit for Minnesota. They talk to the player's coaches and school personnel.

2) Sid asked about the size of the 2017 recruiting class:

“We’ll sign in the upper teens - eighteen, give or take what happens in our program,” Glascock said.

As Claeys has said repeatedly, Billy Glasscock stressed the importance of summer camps for the evaluation of Minnesota and upper Midwest players. Minnesota’s camps will be held starting in mid-June.

3) Sid’s follow-up recruiting question about the 2017 class was focused on Minnesota recruits/players, now that they’ve received two commitments from the Gopher state:

“There’s quite a few, actually,” Glasscock replied, “looking forward to a couple more . . . may not be as big as last year . . . (looking for) ones that can be special for us.”

He concluded the question by saying they always find a player or two in summer camps that they didn’t know much about or have developed faster than expected.

4) Dave Mona asked if they look for players that might be early enrollees in January:

Glasscock said they have a pretty good idea about the players who might be candidates for early enrollment in “late spring or early summer.” He said that it’s an advantage for the recruit and the team if a player can be an early enrollee – “gain a semester;” however, he hastened to add “it’s not for everybody.”

5) Sid asked the final question of the abbreviated segment. He wanted to know Glasscock’s thoughts on this year’s (2016) class:

“Very talented . . . probably most talented (during his six years with the program) . . . like how they run . . . athletic at the skill positions,” Glasscock answered. Although he didn’t give any names, he did say he liked two offensive linemen from the state of Minnesota. My take, he was referring to Conner Olson and Sam Schlueter.

In closing, he said the players who committed early last year “went after other kids (that they were recruiting),” which was very helpful.

Billy Glass cock was succinct in his responses to Sid’s and Dave’s queries, especially since h couldn’t speak specifically about the recruits of 2017. Nevertheless, he sounded positive in his remarks.

Go Gophers!!

Thanks for the update. Would have miss it otherwise.

Yup, thanks. I like Glasscock, energetic guy. The hours spent watching film must be amazing. Sawvel said at a recruiting social that now with Hudl, you can watch films 24/7 if you are not careful.

I know some other sites that you can end up watching films on 24/7 if you aren't careful.
