In a blog the Wolves' hiring of Tibs and where it ranks in Minnesota as far as high profile coaching hires, Pat writes:

Coaches with a national profile when hired by the Gophers:

Lou Holtz, football (1984-85). The ability of Harvey Mackay and others to put together a deal to bring Holtz here remains the most-dramatic coaching hire of all in Minnesota.

IDK I feel Tubby was more accomplished in his sport than Lou was. Although I guess the argument could be made that Tubby hired himself

I agree. Holtz becomes a coaching legend after Minnesota, Tubby before.

Interestingly, according to Wikipedia, Holtz got fired from the University of Arkansas for being too conservative (he filmed two pro Jesse Helms ads from his university office. Who knew?

The hiring of Holtz was really a shocker - I almost fell out of my car hearing it on "CCO. Immediate excitement - I think he drew 40,000 to the Spring Game.
