Reggie Lynch will never forget the last conversation he had with Torrey Ward, the former Illinois State assistant who died in a plane crash flying back from last year’s NCAA championship game.
The day before Ward flew to watch Duke and Wisconsin play for the national title, he met with Lynch, then a Redbirds center, who had been thinking about transferring closer to home.
“He gave me a fist bump and said, ‘No matter what you do, I’ll always love you,’ ” Lynch, now a University of Minnesota junior, said. “He said, ‘I’ll see you after this championship game.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, I’ll see you, man.’ So it was just terrible. … Just devastating.”
