Tony Granato is set to be named the University of Wisconsin men’s hockey coach, according to multiple reports.

Granato, a two-time second-team All-American as a player for the Badgers from 1983 to '87, will succeed Mike Eaves, who was fired on March 18 after 14 seasons.

Granato, 51, has been coaching in the National Hockey League since 2002, including two stints as head coach of the Colorado Avalanche. He has been an assistant with the Detroit Red Wings the past two seasons, after five seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins

With Don Granato and Mark Osiecki as assistants.

Barry had told a reporter that the coach announcement would "knock your socks off," but we were skeptical, as the common perception is that Barry doesn't care about hockey, just hockey money. Pat Richter's group conducted the search.

So did your socks stay on or were they knocked off with the hire? Can he recruit?

Go Gophers!!

Buck will be back quickly with Granato.

We would have been happy with either of the two assistants as Head Coach; nobody figured Tony was available. So, yes, knocked our socks off indeed! Osiecki was known for his recruiting; I'm not sure about the other two, but the combined coaching resumes are pretty impressive.
