Official 2018 Recruiting Updates Thread: Links, Tweets, Videos, Stories, Rumors, etc.

Benny Sapp is a bit different from those two because I don't really consider him an instate recruit (I realize that he technically is). But he is somewhat similar to Douglas from last year. That said, it might be a little tougher to hold on to him. On the flip side, if PJ holds on to his commitment, it's a bigger feather in his cap than Andries or Coughlin.

Have to disagree. Carter was a four star, and neither of them had two torn ACL's. I agree he could be an important recruit, but do not think he is a bigger recruit than Coughlin or Andries.

So I've seen Samson Evans out of Illinois is being recruited as an athlete now. Any insight into what position they are projecting? I talked about not really understanding him as a QB recruit a few pages back and am having a tough time when watching his hudl seeing what they may see in him. I also ask because it seems we're in a fairly good spot with him.

WR was the other position I heard.

Donald Johnson is coming this weekend. Stud CB. 247 rates him as a 4 star. :D

Ryan Burns tweeted about a big time recruit visiting this weekend with 20+ offers. I wonder who that is?

He's probably not a QB at the B1G level, but he has decent size, runs a 4.4, and rushed for over 2200 yards (almost 10 yds per carry) from the QB position, including a state record 274 yards in one game. He's most likely a RB at the next level, IMO.

It was a class A title game record. He also ran for 42 td last year. His teammate Jeff Jenkins (a guard) committed to Iowa already.

I didn't mean in terms of talent, ability, or even recruiting attention.

For Carter, both of his parents are U of M grads and letterwinners and his grandpa was former AD Tom Moe. I think there was a really good chance that Carter was going to end up at the U, regardless of the coach. For Andries, I think he immediately tweeted that he was fully committed to the U regardless of the coach right after Claeys was fired. I'm not taking anything away from Claeys, but these two local guys REALLY seem like they would have come to the U regardless of the coach.

Bennie Sapp doesn't have the same connections to the state or the U. So I think his commitment required a lot more "selling" of the program than the other two. I wasn't really speaking on the level of recruit, talent, or eventual impact on the program.

Why are some people so obsessed with assuming that we will lose every high level recruit? You have to get over these inferiority complexes.

They're not inferiority complexes ... if it is real.

But no way to know what PJ can do for a few years.

You might be being a little dramatic. I never assumed we would lose him as a recruit. I never even said that I thought we would lose him. I simply said that holding onto this commitment through signing day is going to be easier than guys like Carter or Andries (who, IMO, were for sure going to the U). I'd make a pretty big wager that PJ will continue recruiting his commits through signing day. Why? Because kids decommit all of the time.

Maybe if I read The Secret it would change the fact that kids decommit all of the time. Until then, I will just deal with the reality that it is something that happens every single year at almost every single school. NSD was like two weeks ago, do you have the memory of a goldfish?

Benny Sapp Jr. played for Robb Smith in Iowa. Believe that was mentioned in the interview that was posted on another thread. Not really a connection to the U directly, but definitely to the program.

Is there a list of who's attending Junior day this weekend?

I have access to the list on 247, I'll post it a little later this afternoon. More names are added by the day, so it seems like this will be quite the event.

Hey, this is just a heads up....Donald Johnson may be a stud athlete, dont know him personally. However, the team he plays for here in Indianapolis has only won four (yes 4) games in four years. North Central has a student body of 4200 i think. 3rd largest in Indiana. They are a basketball school, but cannot field a team to play football to save their lives. My son played for Warren Central a couple of years ago. The MIC conference is one of the toughest in the country. they won one game last year 2016-2017 season breaking a 32 game losing streak. I hope he is a good student athlete, because Indianapolis is pretty much over looked by I-Who & Purdon't....Good luck Gophers come and recruit Indy. I have a 6'7" junior that needs a scholarship (soccer goalie) / projected to be between 6'10" and 7"1". Does not play football or basketball though, dang him.
