Early Look At 2016-17 B1G Non-Conference Schedules

Penn State, GMU to start home & home

This one doesn't make the "notable" home & home category. Has to be Power 6 or equivalent/better.

Oh how the near mighty have fallen. Once a time when George Mason would have been a solid mid major on a schedule. maybe they still are but to not be "notable" suggests a bit of a decline from the Final Four and solid program days of yesteryear.

Yes, quite a drop-off the last 3 seasons:

2015-16: 11-21, 5-13 A-10
2014-15: 8-22, 4-14 A-10
2013-14: 11-20, 4-12 A-10

So now in mid April and the bottom line is that the home non conference schedule remains pathetic.
But why change as long as tickets are sold?

Season-ticket renewals will be due at the end of May. According to Pitino's blog, by then we should know about the home & home (starting in Williams Arena) opponent, as well as the who & the where for the Gavitt Tipoff (released April 22 last year) and ACC Challenge (released May 13 last year) opponents.

Though, I suspect it's possible the ACC Challenge matchups will be released later, to wait until after May 25, the last day players without an agent can pull their name from the NBA draft.

do we know of any non-conference teams yet? Are we playing the Dakotas again?

Haven't heard anything.

What I know, or what has been reported/confirmed somewhere else, will be listed/updated at the top of this thread.

Rothstein tweeted out a few more games, Rutgers at DePaul, St. John's at Minnesota, Northwestern at Butler and Villanova at Purdue. This would seem to leave out one game.

Minnesota hostying St John's confirm.

I'll take it. They should be better next year, too. Don't we owe them one from a couple of years ago, where we kicked it away in the last four minutes? Would have preferred SH so we could boo Whitehead. It won't be as fun booing Ponds.

Rothstein tweeted that the last Gavitt Game matchup will be Wisconsin at Creighton.

Whitehead may be in the pro's next year. He said he's putting his name in for the draft (no agent yet, so could still change mind).

Gavitt Tipoff Games

Have been added above.

Two matchups really good ones, Villanova @ Purdue and Wisconsin @ Creighton. Northwestern @ Butler could be intriguing, too.

Do we get two home games as part of the Men who speak up invite. Guessing we would have no say in who those opponents would be

Yes, Gophers will get 2 home games with it. The other 4 teams have yet to be announced. 99% chance it'll be a pair of scrub teams.

Figured hopefully they're D1 unlike the NIT. Even if their from small schools, be nice if they were contenders in their conference

The NIT that year was a clusterschmuck. Would be surprised if both home games in the Las Vegas tourney aren't DI programs.

Agree, when playing the mid- to low-majors, it's always better to play ones that have a chance to earn their conference's automatic bid. The Selection Committee does consider "record vs. teams in the field".

Since the Gavitt game matchups have been revealed, I think it is fair to start speculating what the ACC Challenge matchups will be. Since the Gavitt and ACC seem to be correlated based on last year, it would appear that Maryland, Northwestern, Rutgers and Wisconsin will for sure be at home, while Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio State and Purdue will be on the road.

Of the other BIG teams, Michigan, Penn State, Indiana and Illinois are due a home game, while Michigan State and Nebraska are due a road game. Even though Illinois had a home game last year, they played back to back road games prior to that, so they will likely be at home again.

For the ACC, I will assume that Boston College is going to be left out this year. The ones that are due a home game are Louisville, Virginia, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Miami, Notre Dame, Florida State and Wake Forest. The road teams would then be Duke, North Carolina, NC State, Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech and Syracuse. Since there is an imbalance here, one of the teams that is due a home game will have to play on the road.

Here are my guesses, taking into account exempt event matchups and trying to avoid rematches whenever possible:

BIG home games:

NC State at Illinois
Duke at Indiana
Syracuse at Maryland
North Carolina at Michigan
Pittsburgh at Northwestern
Virginia Tech at Rutgers
Louisville at Wisconsin

BIG road games:

Iowa at Notre Dame
Michigan State at Virginia
Minnesota at Georgia Tech
Nebraska at Clemson
Ohio State at Miami
Penn State at Wake Forest
Purdue at Florida State

Thanks.

Would love an opportunity for Gophers to play @ Notre Dame, someone different. Otherwise, the usual suspects for Gophers.

Nov. 16 Gavitt Tipoff

St. John's isn't very exciting but should be a win (?) If so, hopefully it shouldn't scare Pitino off from getting the other home game done.

Pitino will look silly if the home & home doesn't come to pass. He's pretty much promised it. Am confident it will happen. Before mentioning the home & home in his blog, he already knew 1 of the 2 ACC/Big East games would be a home game.
