per the STrib:

Wisconsin announced Friday morning it would not retain longtime men’s hockey coach Mike Eaves. The program had fallen from national dominance to the bottom of college hockey over the past two seasons.

The Badgers finished in last place in the Big Ten for the second straight season, winning a combined five games in conference play and 12 games overall. Their record during this stretch was 12-45-13.

Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez announced a national search to find a new head coach will begin immediately.

Go Gophers!!

Well that record and lazy recruiting will get you fired pretty quickly, this is an important hire for the conference, as fun as it is to see the Badgers stumble, it's better for our program if they're a formidable opponent. Lets see if Alvarez can get it done in a non football search

Mike Richter or Bob Suter anyone?

Why wouldn't Alvarez go after Bob Motzko? Then there are the usual suspects:

As with most head coaching openings in the NCAA, the list of candidates to replace Eaves will be lengthy. The names that immediately jump to mind include:

• Mark Osiecki, an alumnus and former assistant coach. Became head coach at Ohio State and was fired after only three seasons, for reasons that are unclear. He's currently the head coach of Rockford in the American Hockey League.

• George Gwozdecky, former Denver coach who won two national championships and was let go there after a few seasons of disappointments in the NCAAs. Had a stint with the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning and is currently coaching a prep team in Colorado.

• Mark Johnson, mentioned earlier, famous alumnus and current head coach of Wisconsin's women's team.

• Don Granato, another alumnus (1991) who has spent most of his time coaching in the pros, including one season as an assistant with the St. Louis Blues. He was most recently head coach in the U.S. National program

Hopefully, Lucia will follow him to the unemployment office soon! This years fold will happen soon! Talk about lousy recruiting. This years class, 2 third round NHL picks and a 5th round pick. Wisconsin won't abide by substandard performance. Minnesota shouldn't either.

The difference is one of those two teams just finished last in the conference, and the other one just wrapped up a record-tying fifth consecutive conference title.

Winning the most pathetic conference in all of college hockey is not much of an accomplishment. Let's not forget they have been incapable of beating any other Minnesota hockey team for 2 years now. This is not a very talented team, it is going NOWHERE!
FIRE LUCIA NOW!

The question on everyone's mind is: Will Alvarez coach the team in the postseason?

LOL....

I hope they gave the news to Eaves nicely. Wouldn't want him to get mad and punch someone...

You're missing the point. If we won the worst conference in hockey, then how bad must Wisconsin be to go 2-20 in it, or whatever their pathetic record was?

No, they were not as bad as the Badgers but we weren't much better with 16 losses. The gophers played 2 really awful periods last night. Half way through the 2nd period the BTN announcer said, "I wonder when the Gophers are going to start playing?" They only had one really good scoring chance in the 1st 2 periods despite having a 5 minute power play. Then they come out and play a good 3rd period. That's not going to work against a quality opponent. They never play hard for 60 minutes!
This is so typical of a Lucia team when it comes down to the important post season games. They don't move their feet and they don't check very well. Their is simply very little energy to a Lucia Team in the post season.

Evidently you missed the back to back years. Coaching staff is same, kids are different. Tonight is on the kids. It's there, but you have to go out and win it.

I can't believe you said that! That is getting to be a VERY long time ago now! Since then Lucia has consistently failed to preform in the post season. Flat lackluster hockey in the post season has become Lucia's trademark.
It's time for Don to be Gone!

This years juniors and seniors have played in a national championship game, and never failed to win a conference championship. I'd like a few more deep runs too, but to compare us to the team/coach coming off of back to back last place finishes is just ignorant.

No, I did not miss the back to back years! That's ancient history now. Since then Lucia's teams have underperformed badly in the post season. He can not inspire a team to play 60 minutes of energetic hockey. They consistently come out flat and uninspired. It has become a trademark of Lucia teams. It's time for Don to be gone.

Please no. As a Huskies fan......it would suck to see Motzko go to the hated Badgers.

The difference is Wisconsin has won a National Championship in the last 6 years and Minnesota hasn't in the last 12 years!!!!!!! How's that for a comparison????

The Badgers last won the NC in 2006 (Minnesota 02 and 03; Denver in 04 and 05). You might be thinking about the UMD title in 2011. FWIW the North Dakota drought is longer.
