WBB: Gophers @ Michigan State-B1G Game 16 (2/21)

At some point this staff needs to put more than 0% interest in defense. It's borderline criminal that Banham likely will never play in the NCAA tourney.

Yep....really a shame Amanda left early....Im sure Banham wants to play in the NIT like she wants a full root canal.

Stollings' defense has entered the realm of Monsons' 3 man weave that would get pushed to halfcourt, Clem's penchant for taking hot players out of games and Borton's overly scripted offense as a coaching tendency that drives me insane.

Shame that Mullaney won't get a shot at the tourney either.

Didn't Mullaney play in the tournament game last year?

Problem will be corrected next year. Most of the kids on the floor just not quick enough to play straight up defense. That's why she uses the 2/3 match up zone. Beat OSU and get two wins in the tourney and they will get in

An amazing record setting scoring run by the new B1G scoring champ! It’s been pure fun to watch. And it's not over.

Starters (the usual)

Lamke
Banham
Bailey
Starr
Wagner

Minutes Played:

40 Wagner: 20 points
38 Banham: 52 points! 7 assists, 5 rebounds, 14-18 from the field (9-13 from three and 15-16 from the line)
32 Hedstrom: 16 points
29 Edwards: 8 points and 9 rebounds (4-4 from the line)
27 Mullaney
15 Bailey
9 Barnes
8 Starr
2 Lamke

Gophers were 34-72(47.2%) from the field (15-26 (57.7%) from behind the arc and 23-25 from the line)

Add Tubby's line changes and double-down D on the post.

Gotta try something else, as clearly this isn't working at all - something even simpler (basic 2/3 zone with focus on boxing out after the shot, for instance). Both this team and the mens team struggle with the extra movement, lose players extremely often, and fail to box out way too often.

Glad you bolded that because Banham's scoring efficiency in that game was ridiculous.

In the last five games (@Northwestern, Nebraska, Iowa, @Indiana and @Michigan State) Rachel’s numbers are:

69-134 from the field (51.5%)
28-52 from three (53.8%)
42-50 from the stripe (84%)
41.6 points/game (208 total points)
Rachel has played 191 minutes (38.2 per game).

Phenomenal.

What's aggravating is that in an interview after the 60 point game, Rachel answered that defense was going to be the key going forward if they were going to get into the tourney. Not sure if the staff believes it though.

The soft in the zone they play is in the middle. MSU
must have had a dozen or more uncontested layups.Edwards and Barns are very slow to react on the post entry in the middle. It is killing us

Why does Lamke start and then play only 2 or 3 minutes?

Have you seen the Ohio State women play ? If MSU can put up 110 plus on the Gophers, the Buckeyes may score 140.

It is a bit odd. I'm guessing they start Lamke because she's the best at the jump ball and then they pull her for the rest of the game at the first break. If it's not that, I have no clue...... Stollings level weirdness.

Seems to be the only plausible reason.

I think Edwards problem would be the same thing she has in post defense. She's just not strong enough yet. Even if she beats someone to the spot on D or can get up for the jump ball she can pushed out of the way.
