Minnesota is miles from being an elite team. Actually, much further. The Gophers are mostly woeful, but anyone who has seen Michigan of late is left asking whether this team has the mettle to rebound from what's been a disastrous turn to the season.

What is this team made of?

It will try to answer the question once again.

Back to the Barn

The last time Michigan played at Minnesota, the Gophers were 11-2 under first-year coach Richard Pitino and ready to embark on the 2014-15 Big Ten slate. The veneer on the Pitino era was still fresh back then and the fan base was on board with the rebuilding process.

That has since crumbled into a trash heap.

The Wolverines won that day, 63-60, and things have never been quite as shiny in Minneapolis. Pitino's program is 38-53 overall since that game and continuing to trend in the wrong direction.

The year's Gophers are 6-17 overall and 0-11 in conference play. They were recently pummeled by Northwestern, 82-58, after losing to the Wildcats, 77-52, earlier in the season. So, if you're keeping track, that means two of Northwestern's four conference wins have come over Minnesota by a combined 49 points.

The Gophers gave Michigan a run earlier this season in a 74-69 loss. That game was kept close by U-M's 9-for-31 3-point shooting and a mostly listless effort by the Wolverines.

Now, despite giving Indiana and Purdue some close games in recent weeks, Minnesota has matched its worst start in Big Ten play in program history. The 1922-23 Gophers also started 0-11 before winning a season finale against Indiana to finish 1-11 in the conference.

Minnesota will try to snap its current skid on Wednesday, but Michigan has won five straight games at Williams Arena — the venerable Barn — dating back to February 2008.

Go Gophers!!

Is there a more accurate term to describe the mbb program since the beginning of the conference schedule last year?

I would go with "persistent dumpster fire."
